My wife gave me a Dozier Master Skinner(D2 blade) for Xmas. What is the general opinion of knife experts on the Master Skinner?

Thanks

VG, what's your considered opinion?

I love both Dozier's work & D-2 in general & I also love the lines on the Master Skinner so, w/o ever having actually handled one, I'd say you've got a winner.

I think Maddog2020 just got a Master Skinner recently. Hopefully, he'll be along to give you his impressions of the piece. Meanwhile, enjoy!

Cheers,
Brian

Lots of good, experienced folks here - hope you have fun!

Man, you are lucky, my wife gave me a hard time for Xmas. If you want to trade, let me know. HeHe Where is Seabrook? I'm too lazy to look at a map. Lived here all my life and that's a new one on me. Your knife looks awesome on the webpage. How about a Ruger GP 100 (357 Mag, Stainless, 4") even up trade. Only 12 rounds thru it, looks better than new.

I think, and I don't think you will have a hard time finding many others to agree with me, that D2 is among the best of steels for using/working knifes.

It is not as popular as some, such as ATS-34 and others, but that is just the nature of guys, and guy stuff. What is popular today, will eventually fade, and something else will be the newest latest and greatest. And it will probably be some old standby (like D2) that takes over the spot light.

I have heard that D2 is prone to staining, and will not polish out as pretty as some of the more popular steels. I have also heard that it requires someone who knows how to heat treat it properly to make it preform. It has been said many times in this forum, that Bob Dosier is as good as they come at heat treating D2.

As far as the staining is concerened, I have never had mine take a stain, or get rust. I do take care of it, but at the same time, I do store it in it's sheath, and that is supposed to be a no-no. I do put it away clean, and in a clean sheath.

As far as the polish goes, who cares! Do you want a working tool, or something shiney? (mine is from Melvin Dunn and has a very nice finish).

If you can't tell by now, I think you have a skinning knife that is second to none! Mine has proven itself for about ten years now, to out preform anything else I have come accross yet.

And by the way---there are many more members in this forum that deserve the title "expert" than me!

You'll love the Master Skinner. I've had the pleasure of using one of Bob's Yukon Pro Skinners for several years. Awesome knife... awesome steel... stays sharp forever!

What a wonderful gift to receive. Enjoy it, and your holidays.

Merry Christmas!

AJ

Seabrook is a small city right next to Nasa Space Center; take I-45S from downtown Houston 30 miles and Seabrook will be on your left.

No go on the trade. I wouldn't trade this gift from my wife for anything.

Have a great Christmas.

Thanks for your detailed reply.

I have some friends in Wichita, CJ Lett and Steve Anderson. Both guys are in the oil business.

Happy holidays.

piscatorft, I was just jerking your chain a bit on the trade talk. You deal that knive and you will sleep in the garage for a while. I am working a trade right now for a Sebenza. Have a good one and enjoy that knife.

bcaffrey, and piscatorft

My newest is the White River Skinner....I WISH I had the Master Skinner as well!!

All of Dozier's knives are top notch users - the D2 wicked tough and holds a great edge. His Kydex work is among the BEST I have seen (though he isn't know for his Kydex work, be does an AWESOME job!). If I didn't have the Pro Guide, and the Pro Skinner I would buy the Master Skinner (down the road I may anyway.....I love skinners!).

I didn't get any venison this year - I passed on the yearlings though I had tags. I have used the Doziers on domestic cuts of meats - knives come sharp out of the box, and slice like a hot knife THRU butter.

I WISH MY wife got me a Dozier for Christmas!

My toddler was grinning and laughing all day today on Christmas - that is BETTER than ANY knife in the Universe IMHO.

Apparently these Dozier knives must be something else. I have been looking at that Yukon Pro Skinner. Someone has one of his knives for sale on the sell page but I am having trouble talking with them. It is a longer knife than the Pro Skinner. What's a fair price for one of his knives, used? 20-30% off retail??????

My father gave me what looks like one of Dozier's general purpose hunters a few years ago. It's one of my favorites as it's an elegant combination of form and function, and it's also the one that non-knife knuts and work and such are usually most impressed with. I picked up an older book on knives, from the 1970's, and one of the feature articles was Dozier showing the stages of making a custom knife. Although I've been eyeing one of his slim outdoorsmans for awhile I've also developed an appreciation for one of the funky looking elk hunters and may try to pick one of those up next.

My wife is due on January 29. A baby girl and my first. In spite of the knife this Christmas, next Christmas with my daughter will be unequaled.

Happy New Year.

Maddog is right. Bob's knives are all top notch. The Master Skinner is his latest version of his famous pro skinner-this one has a bit more of a drop point and no false edge. The lines are the closest of Bob's designs yet to the Loveless drop point design, and personally I think it's his best work. As far as the market for these knives whether used or unused, they pretty much stay right around retail. AG Russell commands a pretty fair markup on Bob's prices, but there may be a wait if you order right from Bob. Enjoy the Master Skinner-in my humble opinion it's a real beauty of a knife. Oh yeah, D2 is one of the best steels around. I'm not an expert, but I do have a pretty good collection of hunting knives. Take care,
Paul
