Dozier owners - suggestions for my knife, please.

Calling all Dozier owners, I would like to join the club but need some help selecting my first model.

I have only seen pictures, otherwise selection would be a snap. I have been thinking about a general outdoor knife that will be useful for cooking, whittling, and skinning if necessary.

The only one that I have heard much about is the professional guide, which looks awesome. However the 3/16 blade width makes me wonder if the knife can do finer slicing chores. That is, will cut a potato instead of split it like a maul.

Any suggestions you have are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!:)

I had a Professional Guide (sold it), and I can assure you with Bob Dozier's high hollow grind, it will slice like the dickens.

Agree w/ Burke.

I own ....uh lesee... 1...2... 9 Doziers.

One is the Pro Guide. All are hollow ground, Dozier's preferred method.

If you want a 4-3/4" blade, have no fears, the moderately deep hollow grind is indeed a real slicer. The next one up in size, Ranger, is more tactical and has a thicker grind behind edge, whereas the similar to larger Elk Hunter is also deeply hollow ground.

The knife is only limited by it's length as to "finer slicing chores". I'm not sure what you have in mind here, if you want a fine point, check out K4, K6, K7, K9. The Whittler on AG Russell's page has a fine point.

The Pro Guide is my carving knife of choice for roast loin of pork. Paper thin slices are a breeze!

I can't speak for the Pro Guide, but I do have a lg. Elk Hunter. IMO it is one of the finest cutting tools I've ever had the pleasure to hold and use.
Buying it was one of the best investments I've ever made as far as knives go. No joke. Get a Dozier and you won't look back.;)

I have a Pro Skinner and a Straight Personal, which are great knives, but I think you're wanting something a bit bigger, right? You might want to go to his website and check out the new Wilderness Knife.

I would call Bob and Linda and tell them the primary use of the knife and see what they say. My bet (and I will win this one :) is that they will match you up and that you will be quite happy.

I have seven Dozier masterpieces, and I'm planning number eight right now! The Pro Guides knife is a dandy, as is the Elk Hunter. For a slightly smaller knife the K2 General Purpose, K4 Straight Hunter, or Slim Outdoorsman are good choices. Smaller yet brings to mind the Straight Personal or Canoe Knife. Don't worry, you'll end up with more than one, so resign yourself to your fate and plan for several depending upon your uses and needs. I should also add-wants!

I just picked up a KM-4. It wasn't my first choice, but I'm glad I got it. You simply cannot go wrong with Dozier's heat treat on D2.
Super sharp and super tough and a super price.
Good luck!
Barry H

PS. Any one have an extra Slim Outdoorsman or Companion for sale?

Tough to beat the Pro Guide as many mentioned.., but I do think it's a great idea to call with your EXACT purpose and get suggestions...

I called Linda Dozier with some fairly specific ideas about what I wanted. After some discussion and an exchange of sketches I ended up with a knife that meets my original requirements and then some!

This is a variant on his #6 design with a 5-1/2" blade and dual guards added. This knife can do anything. I love it!

And you can't really appreciate a Dozier knife until you've held it in your hand. The grips look simple, but they feel like part of your hand.

That's a beauty, Bob. I have a Model 6 with ivory micarta & love it but I really like the mods you had made. The extra blade length & extended guards really make it a different knife. Oh, Bob D... ;)

Thanks! Linda Dozier suggested it as a starting point when I described what I wanted. I had in mind a fighter that would act as a utility knife...or maybe the other way around.

I've never seen the original #6. How long is the blade on yours?

Here's a pic, Bob:

The blade comes in at 3 7/8", just under the legal NYC limit... that is, if you don't consider the sharpened false edge. ;)

Really like that one Brian ;)
If Bob Q's model doesn't have a name, I suggest 'Steroid Six"
Now if it only had white micarta...
Geode,
The Doziers are very nice folks, get in touch with them and they'll set you up :)
And be warned...Bob's knives are like those famous potato chips...can't have just one! I have three and just fell in knife lust again.
Oh yeah, my EDC is his Personal Utility. Great little knife.

I should have hidden those ivory sixes under the show table from the two of yous! :)

Both the Pro Guide and the Elk Hunters are superb camp/ outdoor tools. The finger groove and round butt design of the Pro Guide is extremely functional and comfortable to hold onto while in use. The slght clip point blade shape will allow for finer chores if called for. And will serve quite efficiently as a fighter in a pinch.

The Elk Hunter(s), both larger and smaller have extremely high and deep hollow grinds. They start right up at the spine. Go to www.dozierknives.com for pics. They slice like the proverbial knife thru butter. Their continuous bellied and more dropped tip blade shapes are more conducive to skinning. The longer strait forward handle design will allow a bit more room for when gloves need to be worn. The flared butt will allow for some leverage if some light chopping is required. I have used both the Pro Guide and the larger Elk Skinner. I' d go for the larger Elk Skinner given the requirements you listed. But of course you will need one of Bobs smaller fix blades to compliment the larger one! :)

I also have a Pro Guide's knife and absolutely love it.
Whatever Bob does to his D2 is phenomenal. This is absolutely the sharpest knife I've ever felt. It almost feels like it's a micro-serrated edge.
And his high grind suits cutting through thicker things like potatos.
One recommendation though, ask Bob to file in thumb ridges on the spine. Makes the knife much nicer to use when things get sloppy.
And one more thing, I think Bob must've taken a lot of anatomy classes somewhere along the line. He has a lot of different handle configurations, but they all feel like they were made for my hands.
Howz he do it?
Lenny

That is too funny!
I went to the show this year knowing I'd get another Dozier.
Wanted to check out the Wilderness model (a little too big) and the ProGuide, and the Model 6. The 6 won because of the hot double grind...but now that I've seen the PG in Ivory..
aaaaaaaarrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhhh!
And the Stretch Six too...double aaaaaaarrrrrrgggggghhhhhh!
All this time I thought I was the only one that liked the ivory stuff ;)
You guys are killing me here:D
