Well, thanks to the praises given by many of our forumites, I convinced by German Uncle to choose the Dozier Professional Guide hunting knife. I recieved it today (after only two days...thanks knifeart of the great service)!

It is SCARY SHARP! The had a hair chorus as I tested it on my arm hair. They were popping like crazy!

The knife fits my hand very well. I have medium to large hands, and the knife felt like it was made for them. My one complaint about the handle is that they are a little too smoothe. I would prefer a more aggresive surface...something like Busse's "Diamond Quilted Micarta". The scales are slim, but are proportional to the knife's relatively small size. It, I believe, is the perfect size for skinning (obviously, opinions will vary) deer and even elk-sized game. The 3/16" blade is strong, but the knife has a light feel, and you probably wouldn't notice it on your belt. The blade tapers quite dramatically about 2/3 or the way to the tip, and ends up with quite a fine point.

The sheathe is kydex, and very nice, IMHO. It has a very large lip, and there's NO WAY the knife will accidentall fall out (it's a little hard to get it out when trying...but it should loosen up a little with use).

Overall, it seems like a GREAT hunting knife. I just wish I could keep it instead of bringing it to my cousin later this summer!

If you have time you could call Bob Dozier and ask if he could bead-blast the handle for you. In another post someone mentioned that it was an option when Bob makes the knives for customers concerned about grip. Alternately you could look for someone in your area to do that sort of thing.

I highly recommend the bead blasted handles. I sent my KS-5 back to Bob (emailed him first, though). $10 and two weeks later I got it back and it's PERFECT. The black micarta is now a beautiful charcoal grey, and the finish is very grippy, yet very comfortable. In my opinion it's a $100 improvement for 1/10 the price. (did that make any sense?) Anyway, I could not have been happier with the results.

Try running water over the handle then gripping it. I think you will find that the grip will actually improve when wet. Also, tie a loop of rope in the lanyard hole and it will help in extracting the knife from the sheath.

I get some pleasure from finding a relentlessly peaceful use for a combative looking knife.

Bob's knives are awesome. Sharp as razors and very well made. Gonna send mine back for the bead blasting on the handles.

Congrats on one super knife!

That's great. I too just received my Dozier "Professional Guide" model last week. It is indeed "Dozier" sharp, and I actually like the smooth Micarta scales. I was using it in the kitchen over the weekend when a friend (not a knife nut, but an excellent cook)picked it up and said, "Now this is the perfect all around knife. It just fits your hand like a knife should, and it is sharp!" He will be ordering one for himself. You should do the same.
