Well I just got my Straight Personal from Bob Dozier after a four month wait. It is a beauty. I had the handles done in tan Micarta with a black stripe. It was worth the wait! I love it!
JUST DO IT!!!! I ordered a straight personal back in the end of January. I upgraded to a wood handle... he has multiple choices there too. I decided on the style for many reasons, the pure aesthetics of it, the length of the blade, the shape/ergonomics of the handle, and the horizontal sheath. I happened upon an Arkansas toothpick at the Badger knife show a couple months ago, and was darn glad I bought it. It is a super knife, and like previously mentioned, can be slipped into the pocket. However, I have found the horizontal sheath to be relatively invisible, esp. if you don't tuck your shirt in. The blade itself is fantastic, the Dozier grind makes the D2 relatively easy to keep sharp. I'm having problems with getting one of my D2 Queen stockmans sharp, but my Dozier sharpens up with just a few passes on the stone.
All in all, I decided upon the straight personal based upon the recommendations by many here. An example of this style can be found on the AG Russell site. Another example of the regular style blade, which is a clip-point can be found on Mr. Dozier's site www.dozierknives.com I just preferred the "straight" style myself. I cannot wait for it to come! The four month wait is pure torture!
I ordered the personal in the "straight" style of blade. I also upgraded to wood handles. I don't have the knife yet, but Mrs. Dozier didn't say I couldn't get it that way when I ordered it. I hope you do order one... we can get a little "Dozier-straight personal" cult going on here!
I don't own a Dozier (yet) but I just finished a custom leather belt sheath for a Slim Outdoorsman, and had the knife in my hot little hands for a few days. My customer ordered this one in bone handles, and I've got to tell you it's a beauty. Wish I could tell you something about the cutting edge, but I can tell you it fits the human hand (well, my hand anyway) perfectly. It's definitely worth the extra bucks for the bone, great texture and feel.
I have an Easler small hunter which is almost identical in size and shape, and I'll say that the Dozier is a match in fit and finish, and has a better feel because of the bone handle. BTW, the leather sheath/Dozier package turned out to be just what the customer wanted. I'm still surprised that some of the best makers don't offer leather as an option. You can see a pic of the Dozier and the sheath at my photo site http://www.webphotos.com/list_photos_edit.asp?mi=1&smi=1&a=57554 (along with other goodies)
