I am going to replace my Cryo and and am looking for a good bang for the buck flipper that's smaller than my Rat1. Has anyone had both? Thoughts on one vs the other? Sorry if this has been done to death. I tried the search function but all morning I have been getting access errors with it.

I feel like the Rat2 has the edge (since I really like the Rat1), but when I read reviews of the Dozier... for $20 they seem crazy good.
Assisted opening is not a requirement.

Any thoughts appreciated.

I love my Rat 2, it's one of the best folders I've ever owned and an absolute pleasure to use. I love the blade shape, the deployment is lightning fast, and the ergonomics are excellent.

I cant believe it's so cheap.

The addition of liners on the rat 2 helps it feel pretty secure imo. Also, the dozier is only drilled for tip up carry I'd that matters to you, while the rat is drilled for all 4 positions.

Good luck with whatever you do :).

Rat 2 all day over the Dozier, cant go wrong with it. Price, ergos, speed, fit and finish and its TOUGH.

I have a Rat 1 in my pocket right now (prefer bigger knives) but would wholeheartedly recommend its smaller brother too. I love this knife - if it came with a DLC blade coating, life would be complete. Almost.

What Dozier are you talking about?...You will not buy real Dozier for 20 bucks !

The Kabar Dozier folding hunter line. Which are awesome knives for the price in my opinion. Love love love my Large.

I know people love the RATs also.

It may come down to lock preference, and I'm a lockback kinda guy.

Neither the RAT, nor the Dozier are flippers.

How about a Ripple?

Columbia River Knife & Tool's version of this Ken Onion design is about the same cost as the Cryo (you may have to shop around a little), but with a very different design philosophy.

With it's own set of Ikoma-Korth bearings, it snaps open with the same authority as any spring-loaded folder, and the metal scales act as a resonating surface, so the lock-up is accompanied by a pleasing sound.

I've had a RAT 1 for a few years and never had one problem with it except the steel isn't the greatest, other than that it's a solid work knife. So I would definitely get a RAT 2 before buying a Dozier.

I guess I'm embarrassed to admit I must not be clear on the definition of a flipper. More info would have been helpful, but I appreciate the correction.

So since the cryo is assisted. . then, do I understand flipper = assisted?

I guess I meant folding knife then.

Thanks for the help.

A flipper is a knife with the blade having a protrusion coming out of the base of the blade behind the edge that, when closed, acts as a lever to 'flip' the blade out without the need for a thumb stud, often just as fast as an assisted knife.

The flipper is the bit of the tang of the knife on the cryo that sticks out above the handle scales that you can use to open the knife. Knives like the Kershaw skyline and chill are pretty well know flipper designs.

The dozier and the rat both open with thumbstuds (which somewhat confusingly your cryo also has).

:).

Assisted means that there is a torsion bar or spring inside the handle. After you initiate opening the blade (either via flipper or thumbstud) the spring takes over to open it the rest of the way.

Assisted knives differ from automatic knives. Autos have a spring as well, but you either push the button or slide to activate the spring which in turn opens the blade. Assisted you actually have to move the blade to activate the spring. This is my understanding of the differences anyhow.

Carried my Rat 2 for year as it was my primary small edc blade. Just a fantastic hard use high value knife. Also one of the smoothest manual blades for its price !

My sister borrowed it a couple of times and loved it so I just ended up gifting it to her.
(Great reason for me to buy another knife to replenish the last !!! )

Fantastic knife... Great price... Win
