Yes that is a black spacer between the guard and scale. Looks like you are just down the road from from me. I had a customer in the shop yesterday from your location. Thanks for the kind words. Mike
 
I am a fabricator but dabble in pounding on hot metal so I am going to try to make it to the blacksmith conference in Murfreesboro TN in May and also the blacksmith meet in Madison GA in the same month.
