I carried my new DPx HEAT/F folder all day today (10+ hours). I alternated between jeans change pocket and regular pocket. It carries very well and deep. Size and price wise it matches up directly against Spyderco Techno. I paid about the same for each.
HEAT/F is heavier at 4.12 ounces vs. 3.52 ounces for the Techno. This was surprising since Techno has all titanium handles whereas HEAT/F is G10 on one side. The titanium slab on the HEAT/F is much thicker and heavier. While the blade on the HEAT/F does not have the big Spydie hole to reduce weight it is a little shorter and the bottle opener reduces the weight a little. Lock up is at about 20% on both.
Techno has a longer 2.5" blade of CTS-XHP whereas HEAT/F is 2.25" of Sleipner. Blade thickness is the same at 0.18".
The handle on the HEAT/F is a good 0.25" longer and the reason becomes clear when you hold it because you can get all four fingers on the handle but on the Techno the pinkie goes underneath. Also, the G10 affords a much better grip since Techno has no texturing on the titanium handles.
HEAT/F gets extra points for the bottle / wave opener and a robust glass breaker but needs a little more time to become smoother (already better today than yesterday).
Techno is buttery smooth right now, is lighter and takes up a little less space in the change pocket. Also, due to slick titanium on both sides extraction is smooth.
Can't go wrong with either. Tough to choose just one. I'd love to see the same size as HEAT/F due to great grip but thin textured titanium handles on both sides. Wait, I have one with full titanium and a flipper but short handle. Itt's called the Curtiss F3 Compact and it's about the same size but costs 3.5 times more!
