DPx Hest 2.0 vs. ZT 0700

I have the 2.0 and the Adamas like above, The H.E.S.T. 2.0 is a good knife. It just kicked the Rukus out of my pocket that was EDC'ed everyday for two and a half years. I have to get some of those blue scales. I really like them.

There are all kinds of color options for scales.

i owned a hest. i liked it a lot. i likes the looks, the shape, the feel. fit and finish was good. the wave like open worked well. the bottle opener worked. and the blade was 61-62rhc

things i did not like:
the black coating was really shitty. it would scuff cutting thick plastic cardboard.
my pivot was never in the happy place, it was either stiff to open but locked like a bank vault, or it flew open with no effort but had blade play. and the pivot used to loosen on me after a day or two or use. i even lock tight'ed it
the big deal breaker and reason i sold it was reports of lock failure during hard use. i owned 2 and decided to see if the guy reporting on it got a lemon. i used the knife a little harder than i usually use my edc blades and after a few weeks there was substantial lock rock and blade play. and tightening the pivot was not a fix. it turned out the soft ti against the ultra hardened d2 blade was a bad idea from dpx gear as the blade dented the ti scale. and that is no good in an extreme survival knife in my eyes.

all in all i liked the knife but i can't have potential knife failure in my edc. i would go for a ZT any day of the week.

*due note though i love lion steel. its not the knife i didn't like, it was the design flaw in the dpx. fit and finish was very good

Hey Issues, I have found something accidently that fixes the scuff problems. After the second or third day of using my knife I started putting one drop of MotorKote on each side of the blade (also the lock face etc.) with a qtip and leaving it on overnight and when I'd get up I would lightly wipe off any excess. I don't know if you know anything about MotorKote but it's an unbelievable product that you apply anywhere there is metal to metal contact. I know in this case it's metal to Ti but I knew it wouldn't hurt anything. OTR drivers originally were the ones that used it and they started sharing stories of the increase in gas mileage and HP and they started putting this product everywhere. Now they have different type of bottles with different applicators - even a spray if I remember right. They have a nice website.

It's not cheap. 32oz. will cost you $26.44 with a five dollar mail in rebate but what I have found is that leaving that on overnight it kinda has created .....I don't really know how to phrase it -- maybe just another layer of protection multipled however many times I'd done that. {?} But I do that either every night or every other night and I can promise you that my blade looks like it hasn't been used. Matter of fact it has actually made the blade a darker hue of black than without it, really sharp looking, wished I had a cam to take a pic to show you. But that will take care of your scuffs. I don't know if regular oil would do the same thing. But that MK product really helped in loosening that new pivot, now that blade fires out fast. Sorry for the long post, hope it helps in some way.:)

I am also going to have to give the nod to the HEST 2.0!

I am a huge Kershaw fan but I can't say I am a big fan of the 0700. I love my HEST and the only knock I can currently give it is the phosphorous coating on the blade which seems to pick up scuffs from opening thin plastic. But a nice blast, polish and stone wash to match the Ti side would really make it pop or even a new black coating that can stand a little more abuse.

Kody - I'm not familiar with the 0700 but I see what the consesus is. I don't know what you'll use your knife for. But the HEST has not let me down once. Out in the woods, be it making a shelter a bowl a cup a windbreak and a pretty cool bed off the ground etc. etc. it has always delivered and I know if something were to happen to my piece that RYP would replace it no questions asked. How can you beat that?

I am wanting a new heavy duty folder to carry. I was wanting your guys opinion on which one and a reason why. I like the DPx Hest 2.0 or the ZT 0700 but am open to other options under $185.

Thanks for the tip!

One of the scuffs looks like it took some of the coating off when I cut through the cardboard and plastic cover for my dog's new registration tag so I think it may be too late to try this trick. I will probably go ahead and get this blade blasted and stone washed along with carbidizing the lockface to prevent any possible lock rock in the future then grab a second one to keep nice and black by starting your coating process from day 1.

One of the reasons I am a huge fan of the blade other than the obvious is the fact that it is a left-handed Ti frame lock that I don't have to shell out over 350-400 for. ;)

I couldn't agree with RandomDan and EZ Bake more -
This. I'd take a 0550 over a HEST 2.0 all day long and you can still find them for less than $200 on the exchange here (and you can find the 0551s for just a tiny bit more if you're in the right place at the right time).

The 0700 isn't really a similar knife to the HEST at all though, so it's not a really good comparison (I'd probably take a HEST over the 0700).

I have both but I bought the DPx first thinking that the smaller size would suit my EDC needs better. Whilst the size does, there is no quality comparison. I felt the need to regrind the HEST blade so that it would actually cut stuff and I had to disassemble and re-set the lock bar to avoid vertical bladeplay. It now works but the blade isn't centred.

Contrast that to the 0550 which whilst hefty actually slices out of the box. Okay it doesn't slice like a Spydie PM2 but not much does. Most importantly (to me): the fit and finish on the 0550 is miles ahead of the HEST. I really didn't think the difference would be so profound. The HEST is okay, the ZT is terrific (and bear in mind that I really wanted to love the HEST)...

It looks like you're all set on the HEST, in which case I wish you the best of luck with it. I hope you get a better one than I did. Don't discount the 0550. It does take up more pocket space, mainly due to the width differences but there is only one which I carry as my primary knife - the ZT.

Guys, forgive my folder newbiness, but what does the big round nut in the middle of the locking side handle slab do?

Hey, Joe,
That thing rotates and locks the blade open like a fixed blade. May or may not be a useful feature. Kind of gimmicky, IMO. Reviewers tend to say it's something they don't like.
