Have any of you used this grinder? It looks like a big step up from the Delta combo thing I'm using now  2 1/2 x 48" belts sounds odd, would it be a problem finding good belts for it? Just wondering if anyone had any info, thanks.

The Grizzly is a better budget grinder for knifemaking.

From someone that taught himself to grind on a horizontal grinder (I guess you could mount this on a board or something to make it vertical) it's tough to ask questions of people because so few people grind like this.

For the same price you could buy a Griz and use 2x72 belts or build a NWG and be on your way to a good motor.

i have one never use it, any fore mentioned options are better than this,
i have been considering converting it to a Horizontal machine similar to
rob frinks Horizontal machine just to get some use out of it bb

2.5x48 is an uncommon belt size, you would find abrasives, brands, grits, and vendor selections very limited. A no go, IMO.

Added: www.trugrit.com has one of the best belt selections around. If they don't offer a decent selection in a given size, I would be very hesitant about ready availability.

Problem is grinding on the wheel, too much opportunity to stick your steel into it. Coote, NWG or Grizzly in the $400-500 range, in my opinion.

Trying to hollow grind on a wheel with the belt narrower than the wheel will result in "2inch" marks all over, too. That said, this grinder doesn't look like it has much clearance for left hand grinding, either. Mostly a platen machine and perhaps handle shaping on the wheel.
Better economy in the long run to spend more and step into a 2x72.
