I thought I would try you guys and see if somebody out there can help me.

I am looking for an original or reproduction of the WW1 DeWalden Welsh Fusilier's Trench Knife.
I am willing to trade and pay up to $1000 for this weapon if original and 500$ for a reproduction.
Serious help or offers only please.
Thanks

he is the specialist on these things
we had the topic a few months ago (it is this leaf-bladed knife right?).
search-function does not work prperly for me - sorry

Danny,
As I doubt if you will find an original for anywhere near $1000 I reckon The Best source for one, is have it made by Wilkinson sword, as they made one for the Welsh rugby union celebration in 1981 they would still have the plans.
At least then it would be made to correct specifications!

It will cost a lot more than $500 though!

Believe it or not, I have been to and spoken to almost everyone you guys have mentioned already.
The wilkinson sword people had to go through their files just to remember making that sword.
I suspect you guys are just searching the web for info, which is perfectly fine, but believe me, I have been there and done that.
I did find the name of someone to email, so maybe he can help me.
IMA used to sell reproductions for 95$ !!!
Alas, no longer offered.
Still, I continue...

they wouldnt even discuss it.
they said it was a special one time thing for the rugby team and they had no plans to make any more.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm strange & a pity, Guess you need political clout or publicity to get a one off from them nowadays or perhaps they hope to hear you use those immortal words, "Price is no object!" & "Ill pay in advance" LOL

I Guess if you orderd a 100 they would do it!

O well good luck in your search! If you find an real extra one let me know!

Regards,

WS did a special "Woodlore" knife recently - 195 GBP for maple handle version. Apparently the quality was quite poor, per our friends over the pond.

but really rare. You'd have an easier time retrofitting a leaf blade with a collapsible guard (or smaller quillon block) to duplicate. Won't be a replica, but would be in the same spirit of things.

Please explain Talinton.

I offer this link because the site says 'Your Trench Knife Maker'. They may be able to help you. Or make one.

There is a note that they are experiencing some health problems, so there could be a delay in responding.

Good luck.

Problems w/ WS Woodcraft knife are explored at length at British Blades. That's east of the pond as opposed to west of the pond. :)

IMA still lists it's wares in Shotgun News. Hokey cartoons and all.

( Actually the cartoons remind me of Edgar Rice Burroughs novels - couldn't decide if they were just trash, or if they were really good trash!

( They are still out in my garage, what does that tell you? )

A practitioner of ninpo develops an eye for weapons the same way a chef develops an eye for produce.

Oy! Look at that turnip!

The DeWalden knife is not specialized, that's why I love it.
It is a powerful chopper, fantastic for thrusting, it has reach and yet it is capable of being concealed as its guard folds flat.

We don't just use Japanese weapons. Far from it. Most Japanese weapons are variations on somebody else's designs anyway.

I have seen Hatsumi Sensei's weapons collection and it is a vast house full of amazing pieces from every continent, every century.

I am reminded of one of Sensei's favorite swords. A "shikoro-gatana."
It looks like a katana, but the blade has been shortened and given big saw-teeth all the way down the blade.
Remember: ninpo is only concerned with the survival of the practitioner, not the aesthetics of perfectly cutting straw or flesh like the more popular tameshigiri/iaido schools.

In my opinion, the DeWalden knife is the perfect bladed weapon.
Have a look for yourself and really examine the design closely...

OT:

My favorite gatanas were the ones ment to fit inside regular katanas scabards, the gatana is shorter than a katana, and the space provided was a (suposed) great space to hide your coin. 8~{)

As for finding a smith for the blade you are looking for, there are MANY. In all contanents. I will bet you Bura could build you one. For the price that you are looking at.

I also see no advatages for a folding guard. Any "hiding" charicteristics will be lost by the size.

And although the blade is never ment to "attack" another blade, in the of chance of close quarters suprise "combat" and the guard "was needed". I would believe the neat fact of it folding would make it inefective as a guard.

My few cents.
Also since I truly believe none of us (expecialy me!) will ever use our knives for anything other than fun. I used quotations "" to point a fanticy point of view other than reality from my self.
I hope you all understand.
