After Saturday night at Home Depot, I am finally the proud owner of a Dremel Multipro. It feels so cool.:D

And if your knives had legs they would now be running to get outta there, But then again if they did, you could now cut em off :D

Some of the most common mods I do with mine is to add thumb grooves to my Spyderco humps (something like the Native has, only smaller). Also add the Boyle(sp?) detent to the lock on the lockback models.

They take a little practice to see what you can do with all the different attatchments, Ive fooled with mine for years and still come up with new ideas for it...Their fun to use to make your knives just a little bit more "yours".

The bits and accessories sold by Dremel are a total rip-off! The identical items can be found at a fraction of the price that Dremel charges at any wholesale jewelry making supplier. Not only will you save lots, but you will find a much greater selection at these places.

Typical are things like minature buffing wheels: $2.99 for a pack of 3 from Dremel, .40 each out of a bin at a shop here. Mini grinding wheels from .50 each, sets of micro drills form a couple of buck and so on.

If there isan't a supplier near you, check the web: many deal mailorder - savings on a small order should more than cover shipping..

Another good thing about Dremel-you can replace the motor brushes when they wear out. Some of the new Dremel competitors B+D,Ryobi have no replaceable brushes.Once the motor stops it is time to go buy a new tool.I hate tool mfgrs.who do this.

Also get the Multipro chuck so you don't have to swap out collets, which can be a PITA depending on what you are doing.

Does anyone own a 7.2V battery powered Dremel? Can't exactly just dump a lump of granite in the shop and ask for a demo... Any good comparing with the original?

Anyone tried to "jewel" a stainless handle on their knife?? Just wondering if it can be done with the Dremel.

Santi,

In a jewelry class I took, we used a Foredom - the motor is much bigger than on a dremel and it uses a foot pedal speed control. It's also two or three times as expensive. For the price, the Dremel is pretty damn great. But the Pros use the Foredom, so that's gotta say something too.

a knifemaker and custom jewler... ill try to give you the
best explination... for most jewler work..a good dremel will
work just fine.. that little rechargeable one is a fantastic
stonesetting tool.. ive 4 foredoms lined up here..and i dont get them
going unless i know the job will overheat the dremmel...hot dremmel
is no fun to use.. as for the chuck..gotta have it! dremmel without
chuck is pain in the ass... ive a pile of chucks.. keep them in
a bowl of oil when not being used..if one starts locking up ..remove
it and clean it out..throw it in the oil and get a oiled up one
out..clean oil off and use it..this way..you never use them up..
AS FOR THE DREMMEL FLEXSHAFT..JUNK..TRASH..DONT GET IT.. the bearings
in the chuck wear out easily.. then you have to trash the entire
shaft.. just use the little jaw chuck mounted right on the dremmmel end... as for bits..guys..there are mainly 3 kinds that will do almost any work needed on a knife.. the rubber sanding drums..
the deep red grindstone in the size of about a nickel.. and the
polishing wheel screwbit.. that will hold the buffs.. use only
the small 1" sewn yellow buffs..they last lots longer..do a better
job..and control much better... i can offer suppliers if you all need them..for anything... guys one of the best polishers you can make at home ...get a bench grinder.. take a hacksaw to the right side
shaft..(after you have removed all covers and stones!) turn on
the grinder..place the hacksaw right where the threaded part ends
and the smooth shaft starts..cut off the threaded part..its very very
easy..as you get to the center..an their is about 1/8 metal left
turn off grinder and smack it with hammer..the threaded end will fall off...then slide on the screw spindle for 1/2 shaft motor that you
have ordered from jewlers supply for right side.. ( they come in
left and right) slide it on..tighten the set screws good.. now you
have a professional 3600 rpm polisher.. take one of the 4 or 6 inch
yellow sewn buffs you purchased from the supplier also.. and turn on
the buffer..place the hole of the yellow buff onto the screw..
it will grab it an set it..now..whack it towards the buffer a time or
two easily with a piece of wood..easily... that will set it well..
now..take your polishing compound..add some by sticking it right to
the spinning buff.. now your ready to polish! ( a note..this is very
messy..do it outside..in the garage..but NOT IN THE HOUSE!)
When polishing..if your item gets hot..that means you need more
compound..always polish on the lower side of the buff..below middle
point.. NEVER DO THE FOLLOWING: POLISH ANY KIND OF CHAIN..EVER!!
IT WILL GRAB IT..BEAT YOU TO DEATH..MANGLE YOU..AND SPIT YOU BACK OUT
IN LESS THAN 2 SECONDS..TRUST ME..NEVER..EVER..POLISH A CHAIN OR ANY
LONG ROPE OR STRING TYPE OBJECT!! EVER.. ONCE THAT BUFFER GETS AHOLD
OF ONE..ITS LIKE TRANOSAUROUS REX! IT WILL MAUL YOU BADLY..IF IT DOESNT KILL YOU FIRST!!!!! DONT DO IT! ..... AND NEVER POLISH A BLADE
SHARP SIDE UP..THATS ALMOST AS BAD..OTHERIWISE.. ENJOY POLISHING! OH..
WEAR A MASK AND BAD CLOTHES..ITS VERY NASTY MESSY EVENT..POLISHING..
NOW..AFTER YOU POLISH..CLEAN YOUR ARTICLE WITH THAT YELLOW SUDSY
AMONIA... ITS THE ONLY THING WILL CLEAN POLISHING RESIDUE OFF...
IF YOU HAVE MIRROR POLISHED..DO NOT TOUCH THE FINISHED AREA AT ALL!
PUT THE ITEM IN THE AMONIA FOR A BIT..THEN SWISH IT AROUND..ALOT..
WHEN ITS CLEAN..TAKE IT OUT..DONT TOUCH IT YET..GO WASH IT OFF IN
THE SINK UNDER WARM WATER..THEN DO IT AGIAN! AFTER CLEANING AND
WASHING AGIAN..DRY WITH VERY SOFT CLOTH..NOW.. GO CLEAN YOUR HANDS..
THEY HAVE POLISHING DUST IN THEM..AMONIA AGIAN GUYS..ANDITS GOING TO
STING!! SO HAVE FRESH WATER HANDY! ONCE YOU ARE CLEAN..YOU CAN HANDLE
THE BLADE AGIAN..OIL IT...WIPE OFF.. PROFESSIONAL JOB! WELL DONE!
NOW YOU KNOW WHY WE CHARGE FOR THIS! ITS A JOB! WELL...HOPE MY
LITTLE PRIMER ON POLISHING HELPED SOMEONE OUT WITH HOW ITS DONE...
AS FOR ON A DREMMEL..SAME THING..JUST USE DREMMEL..AND LOTS N LOTS
OF EFFORT! WHEW! DARKMAN!

My dad just ot the digital one for christmas. It's pretty cool. You can set it to any speed between 5,000 and 35,000!

I like 'em! In about 30 minutes with a Dremel you can take a $7 livestock cane and turn it into a great tactical whacker. I have the drill press attachment, very handy and converts to a pretty fair tool holder for handsfree work. I don't use the flex shaft attachment much but it seems okay for my limited purposes. Don't know how I survived the Pre-Dremel days.
Stay Safe,
Clyde
p.s. As a matter of fact I've got a "date" with my Dremel Sat night. Gonna have a few beverages and turn some 5/8" polycarbonate rod into pocketsticks :D

about 2 years ago mine and my friends playstations both broke, his was the cd drive and my controller port shorted out because i stuck a memory card in it that had gone through the washer(i didnt know i swear!) so anyways we decided to take the two apart and put my cd drive into his PSX cause his already had the mod chip in it.
so we took my dremel tool and sawed the top off of my playstation
then we took the cd drive out, and of course ir didnt freakin fit in the old one because it was shaped differently, so we used the dremel to route a bigger hole in the psx and take the little leg nub things off the cd drive, it worked perfectly after that.

without the dremel it wouldve been just two broken playstations
but he got to keep the good one:(

Thanks, Clyde! Great sites! That's what I guessed, but I wanted to be sure.

yes the foredom is awesome I use it to drill and grind everything. from porting cast iron cilinder heads to porting shotgun barrels it's much quieter than the dremmel and dosent seem to chatter as uncontroablly as the dremmel another cool one is the neumatic units that can be found for under $40 the only drawback it under constant use they get really cold.
