Drill bit help?

I'm hoping for some advice on drilling a 1/16 hole in harden steel? My best guess is a stub length tungsten carbide drill bit but I know it's going to be fragile so I'm curious if there's anything else you would recommend (if not what kind of speeds would you recommend drilling at)? I'm hoping to drill a variety of steels but I'm not planning on drilling anything thicker than 3/16th. Any help would be much appreciated!!!

If you don't have a rock solid drill press or mill and a good vise to lock down the work, don't buy any carbide bits. Speeds vary depending on what you are drilling and your equipment.

I use carbides on a regular basis after heat treating to allow me to do better positioning of the hole needed.
The breakages are seldom.

Carbide tip drill bit. Norseman makes one. They break pretty easy though

This is the best option for drill press work. HSS shank with carbide tip is far more tolerant of spindle run out and less rigid setups than full carbide. Cheaper too.

I still torch temper to blue wherever I'm going to drill in a hardened tang. Your drill bits will thank you. It's easy and fast to do and you can protect your blade temper by holding it under water if necessary.
