I wince every time I chuck up a carbide bit. Lot's of oil, speed and steady firm pressure. I use them as little as possible. They are expensive but they can ruin your day if one snaps off in a hole.

There are 2 common degrees, 118 and 135. The 135 works better for carbon and mild metal. The 118 is better for wood, non-ferous and other stuff. I prefer split point as it doesn't wander or hunt when starting a hole as much. (That should bring on a stern lecture from the machinists about using a spotting drill...) I also tend to like jobber length drills (these are shorter than typical drills) to keep the flex down.

I have and use a Drill Doctor and recommend one to anyone that will listen. If you mess with metal for any length of time, these will pay for themselves. I don't like sharpening a small split point drill on them. It seems to take more than once to get the (split point) bit sharpened just right so it doesn't skate. Any other bits it is just fine and it does work with split points. It just a time or two occasionally to get the point just right.

For being such a simple appearing tool, drill bits are unbelievably complicated and all the marketing hype doesn't help.
