Drill Press Advice Needed

Better drill bits ?

I have a little bench top similar to yours and have done some pretty amazing drilling with it considering the limitations.

I now, in addition, have a big floor model Delta but that was more for larger distance between head and table.

Love the thing but I do woodworking.

Be sure to drill a tiny pilot hole then use a larger bit to drill to size. Prick punch and then center punch helps too.

Mill drill ? Oh yah baby. My old partner had one I used a lot. Has some limitations of its own though as far as drilling larger projects and what you can get onto the table; sometimes that little thin table is handy.

As a guy once said : I guy needs TWO of everything.

since at this point im spending your money ;) look at the LMS mini i upgraded my HF mini mill with belt drive anyhow and am so happy i did. other side to that i for sure know how slow buildingn up toolig can be so get the mill and use it as you upspec parts and tooling its one of 4 tools i cant live without (KMG kiln and some sort of duel use saw are the other 3 )

I was looking at either this one: http://www.grizzly.com/products/Drill-Mill-with-Stand/G0704?utm_campaign=zPage&utm_source=grizzly.com

Or this one: http://www.grizzly.com/products/Mill-Drill-with-Stand-and-DRO/G0759?utm_campaign=zPage&utm_source=grizzly.com

both of those mills are much nicer then my mini mill. i started the cheapest way i coudl and have been upgrading and adding tooling overr the years

Thanks for the advice everyone! I think I'll probably wait and just get a Grizzly mill sometime in the future so I can make folders too.

In regards to the speed I'm running, I've tried going to the lowest pulley, but there is no power when I do. The bit just stalls right away.

When the bit stalls, does the motor stop?

Man, for $1250 to $1800 I'd seriously consider looking for a used Bridgeport (or similar) knee mill. They're a little bigger and a pain to move around too much, but the extra power and capabilities are well worth it.

If you really like the G704 though, I'd also take a look at Precision Matthews. They have (or at least they used to have, I haven't looked in a while) this same mill, but it's dialed in a little better than what normally ships through Grizzly, and if I'm not mistaken, there are a couple of upgrades. The price is a little higher, but back when I was shopping around, the consensus seemed to be that it was worth it.

since i hae both a mini mill and a bridgeport i can weigh in. i only use the bridgeport now and then while the mini mill does 95% of my work that last 5% tho is bridgeport only
think i have less then a grand in the mini mill with the belt drive and only spent 1500 for the BP nether have DRO or power feeds the BP is a step pully for speed ajustment and the mini has 2 "speed" but fully VS control
hard to say if i would get rid of one over the other tho as they both do different things in well for me in the shop. nicest thing is all tooling is able to be swapped between the mills. the mini stayes in the dirty shop and the BP is in the cleaner area.
