Drill press question

can I get by with a little harbor freight model?

Absolutely.

I have 5 of the HF drill presses (I don't like changing drill bits), and they have all worked fine.

I actually like the HF presses better than the Skill or Delta versions I had.

I think I will end up with the harbor freight 12 speed. thanks all with the input.

edit: does HF have a black friday sale? if so, how good is it?

Up until recently (about 7 years) I have been very pleased with my Delta 12" DP 200. My spindle is now stalling- I am afraid I sheared a key. I now realize Delta was bought out and many parts are no longer available. I do have a small HF 8" that is nice for the price but not much oomph.

You may just have a worn belt. There should be provision at the motor mounting area to tension the belt. Mark a bright line on the corner of each pulley and one across the belt, and then try to stall your spindle. You'll be able to see what stops and what keeps moving, and narrow the problem down from there.

I have smaller drill presss where the pulleys are just help in place with a set screw on a flat part of the shaft. Sometimes the set screws loosen up, and just need tightened again.
