So I looked using the google search and didnt see anything. Didnt find much on google so maybe I was looking using the wrong words or something.

Was wondering what if anything you guys do about your drill press shavings. Right now I have a bench top drill press (pos craftsman) that sends shavings anywhere in a 4 foot radius around the drill. Would like ideas for building some kind of shroud or if they have something available that helps to midigate this migration of metal bits everywhere.

Kind of also on the topic has anyone here done any kind of shroud around there grinder to help direct the dust to a dust collector? I have a slag bucket under the front with a ventilation (4"x12") that helps direct the big heavy stuff into it and a dust collector that sits relatively close. Was thinking this would work better if I had some kind of shroud to kind of herd the dust toward the collector hose. I also have a couple of magnets by the belt as well that collect alot of the metal stuff.

Anyways picks would be outstanding of what you guys have if anything.

Thanks

Hi Quint,
If I am doing a lot of drilling I use shields.
A way to make portable shields is to take a 2x4 and cut a slot with a table saw down the middle lengthwise. Than put in some laun plywood and screw in place. You can make the shield as tall or long as you want. I Hope this helps out.

Thanks David. I have some plexiglass that aint being used and was thinking of trying to build something. Just dont want to be reinventing the wheel as I am sure some brighter people then myself have already done this.

Quint, something I've done with the Mill to keep chips from flying everywhere, especially when using a flycutter.

I use a shroud around my KMG. I used card board as an experiment and never changed it. The dust collector is outside the shop and there are two 4" exhaust ports the one in front is just a slip fit so it can be replaced by a water bucket the other is in the back , hard to see.
The system is used only when grinding non spark generating stuff.
It works very well, keeps the shop clean. I also extended a port to the buffer with a similar cardboard shroud.

The switch for the filter and supplied air respirator are at the upper right of the picture.

I also made a couple of rubber flaps to contain some of the debris thrown by the belt.

Just set it in a big cardboard box that's tall enough to catch the metal. That's what I did when I had my drill press inside my house. If the cardboard gets in your way then cut a little of it off til it's not in your way.
Now I have it in my shop and I only have one side shielded so cutting fluid doesn't get all over the rest of the bench. I just sweep everything else up.

Patrice thats great, it will work and looks piece of cake to rig up. I like the fact with the clear plastic you can see thru it.

Mark excellent setup. I think I will use your prototype and go straight to something in sheet metal. I think with your setup on the buffer will work perfect with a couple sheets of plastic that can be dropped down to cover the front up while working with other stuff to keep any particulate from landing on the buffer wheels. Oh and I wouldnt mind having that disk/belt grinder of yours.

Fumbler Thanks for the ideas. Pretty much have the same setup, bench top on end of bench. I just have the forge and anvil stuff off to the left of it.

Re flinging shavings,

If you reduce speed of the drill press, you will have less flinging.

Also if you "peck" drill pressure and release every so often, the chips don't build up any speed for the long distance fling.

I have also at times put a shop vac pickup close to the drill bit, mostly on G10 and micarta laminates.
It can get in the way, but I think it helps to pick up those chips.

I cut a LOT of firebricks on the drill press and they send firebrick dust everywhere. I have a piece of HDPE (think milk jug) surrounding the right half of the table and a shop-vac on the left side to vacuum up the dust. It cuts down drastically on the mess. I have a pizza box underneath the work table to collect the dust that falls through the slots.

Remember, the drill press is one of the most dangerous machines in the shop, just as dangerous as the oft-discussed buffer. Metal spirals pick things up and send them flying and helicoptering blades can bang the heck out of your knuckles and even break fingers. When drilling metal or plastic, repeatedly "peck" as numbers said.
