I am looking at a drllpress from Harber Freight, money is a factor,i found a 12 speed 1/2 horse 10'' drillpress for $90.00 they also have a drillpress milling vise for $60.00.All i am going to do is drill holes and maybe slot guards, maybe some other small knife work.Would like an opinion.

Thanks,Keith

It sounds good to me. 12 speed is great but you may never use more then 2 or 3 at the tops. Things just drill better at slow speeds. It saves on bits and look better at the end of the job. As in cleaner.

Got a Harbor Freight DP Model 44836 1/2 Hp 250-3350 RPM's JT-2
I took it to MTT class and checked the run-out.
My dial indicator has .0005 index.
The arbor by itself had a runout of about .0020
The needle did not reach 0.0020, it's probably about 0.0018
I chucked up a precision dowl and the chuck's run-out
was alittle under 0.0035.
I think for an 89.99 Drill press that's not too bad. I might replace the chuck for a keyless, this one only goes down to 3/16's.

Keith, I have a small Craftsman bench model and the runout at the chuck was driving me crazy when I tried to make my first folder. I started looking at drill presses and the ones that I looked at were pieces of crap!

Those specs on the HF that Tommegow got are very impressive for an inexpensive DP. If you have a HF near you, take a dial indicator with you so you will know what your are getting.

Some of the DPs I checked had runouts of .015 to .020", and too much vibration. At some point, you will want nice round holes exactly where you want them. Thats hard to do with a lousy drill press.
Best wishes, Don

i got a jet press from a pawn shop for 100 and the motor was switched out with a 3HP. has all the power i need :D

I picked up a drill press from Big Lots and it is the cheapest DP I have seen, 50 bucks took it home. It actually works alright! I would love to have more power but for now she does the trick and I am happy to get her so cheap. I think you found a good deal, I may get the vise as well. Good luck.

Some of the cheaper one and even some of the name brands have a fixed chuck, I had bought 2 nice keyless chucks for each press and to my dismay the ryobi would not allow me to replace it.

My Craftsman 20" of course was no problem, but for folder work I prefer the smaller press.

Glad I saw this thread. I've been looking at HF for several tools, including a drill press and a 10" bench grinder. Seems like people think that they're acceptable tools for the $??

On the smaller bits and the big chuck problem. I have a very small key less chuck with a 1/4" shaft on the drive end. I simply chuck it in my larger chuck or if in my mill I use a 1/4" collet and away I go. Just get a small chuck and thread it on a grade 8 bolt with the head cut off.
