Drilling a hole in a ferro rod?

Just make sure you wear sunglasses. I do it on a regular basis... no problem. The rods are rather brittle so don't push too hard. I was cauious to the extreme at first but now, just let her fly on high speed... a good pair of leather gloves helps.

I think I will get a big one then..I have always wanted a large rod .

Does your husband know your posting under his account

:D:D:D

Sorry bro, I went and picked up some 90 min IPA today and 3 of them are gone, I couldn't resist:o

I sell a lot of blank rods and several of my customers have succeeded in drilling holes. They all have recommended slow speed to prevent overheating the drill.
PM me and I can send more info.

Excellent. I have been wondering about this peripherally for quite a while.

I drilled a 4mm hole in my roughly 1/2" firesteel, and it chewed the drillbit (TiN coated HSS) up. I got through, but the drill is junk now. No sparks at all, and I was going fast.

I'm gonna order the bunker next month with a hole already in it.Good metal drill bits aint cheap and for the extra few bucks you get a bigger rod.

Just drilled mine in the garage. Center punched it where I wanted the hole, clamped it in my shop vise over a tin of water, used a variable speed drill motor with a one/eight bit, slow rpm's, blew away the chips as I drilled, a couple of sparks, no big deal and the job was done. My technique was to drill slow, stop, blow away the chips and repeat the sequence until the drill poked through.

Just perused this zombie thread and some of you cats scare me. You guys are using a vice on a drillpress to do this, right? Drilling round stock held in your hand, with a hand drill is flat stupid. Just sayin' :)

Anyway, yeah, like Rick said (over 5 years ago :D), it's not that big of a deal. Just follow normal safety precautions.
