drilling antler

I don't have any pictures, but I know of people building a jig with a raised platform that you clamp your piece to the bottom of. It is essentially the same as clamping your piece to the bottom of the work rest, if your rest was dead flat on the bottom.

If drilling for pins on a partial tang where neither side is flat you can clamp by the ricasso and drill by supporting the rest of the handle.

This photo was borrowed from Steve Culver's website. I know he also has the jig mentioned earlier(it was his I saw) but I can't find any photos.

Good luck
Chris

I have done every one of my antlers by hand and have had pretty good results (except for once) All i do is put a smaller block of wood under it so i can move or rotate it on an axis as required. to line up the second hole straight i place a piece of rod in the first hole and align it so both holes are straignt.

sorry i can't help more

I normally clamp my knife and scale to my drill press rest and drill through the existing holes in the tang. I put a pin in the first and drill the second. This keeps everything perfect. It only works when both sides are flat. I will try making a jig. Just want to make sure im not missing anything simple.

Maybe this photo will help make sense. Photo drilling a bridge, but the same principle still applies.

This is what I was trying to describe. Try and make a jig or your workrest where it is flat and true on the bottom. Clamp the knife and scale to the bottom so you can still use the existing holes as a template and drill through.

Good luck!
Chris

For sambar stag carvers, i just drill a hole and then remove all of the pith with a handle broach and replace it with epoxy.

I was talking about using them for scales. I haven't done any hidden tangs yet but I'm going to soon.
