drilling holes in a knife

i recently purchased a hunting/combat knife, always wanted one and finaly got one for relativly few dollars

it is a very simple knife with no fancy design, just a handle, guard and a 25cm long blade :)

now as i later found out in the woods, the knife is pretty bad for throwing esp from the handle, throwing it from the blade is easier but its size still makes it akward to use

so for purposes of personalization and weight balancing, i wanted to drill some holes in the blade portion.

i could always add a weight to the handle, but id rather take off than add.

now i'm no blacksmith or metalurgist, but i know that simply drilling the knife might weaken it, so i'm here asking for advice if its possible to drill it, if i need a special drill bit, and what would be the optimal place to drill

i'll post pictures later,

also id assume you people wanted to know the metal make up? i believe its forged steel but could be wrong.

how about some picks of the knife. also, how about filling out your profile so we know a little more about you.

couldnt find my camera, but i found the knife on the internet,

product description reads "440 stainless steel"

440 is going to be through hardened and you'll probably need a carbide drill to go through it. The drill bit will probably cost as much as the knife. I wouldn't recommend drilling holes in your knife unless it means nothing to you. Since it's not a throwing knife I wouldn't try to balance it as one.

I don't think you'll compromise the strength too terribly much, depending on how you do it, but it may affect the way it cuts/chops through wood etc. The type of modification you're talking about is really something that should be designed into the knife and done before it's heat-treated.

thats pretty much what i assumed was the case :(

thank you for the reply,
