drilling question

Well said James. There is a lot of great science out there, and people who need to get the most out of tools and techniques to maximize productivity/decrease operating costs have got this all figured out.

Not true. Solid carbide spade bits will drill hardened cutlery steel. But they are even more touchy about feed/speed.

I third (fourth?) the motion to search out Nathan the Machinist's thread on making holes. Drilling is one of the topics where us cantankerous, largely self-taught knifemakers, who often tend to want to do things the "quick an' dirty" way (whether it makes any sense or not) really need to listen to our friends with more education and experience.

Never said that there wasn't one that could do it, just that it wouldn't necessarily work good. There would still be a degree of difficulty to it.

I think the problem is my drill press. The minimum speed I can set on it is over 500rpm. The motor's small so if I try to increase the feed it'll just stop.
I think I have to give up using unibit to drill large holes and instead drill multiple small holes with smaller bits.

I use a 3/8" drill for metal removal. My drill press is a HF benchtop model thats lowest speed is 250 RPM. It has served me good for a little over a year. Slower speed is your friend here.
