buy a new bit, and a 1/8 inch Reamer as well, also your rod may be out of round slightly as well, so you may find it better to step up to a 9/64 drill bit
Another way to go at this is to drill the hole with an 1/8" bit. Then chuck the rivet wire in the drill press and turn it on slowest speed. Grip the turning rod with a piece of 100 grit sandpaper and run it up and down the rod one or two times. The rod will now be a few thousandths thinner, AND will be roughened to hold the scales stronger. Test it and repeat until it slides in just right. Do the whole foot of rod and you are ready for the next three knives.
