I'm soon going to have to drill thru uneven materials stag/ bone etc.

I was wondering how to drill thru the liner side out thru the bone ???
With the bone being uneven I cannot rest it on the drill press.

So I read somewhere I'll need to build a cradle to hold the flat liner up.
If that makes since...

Any pics of jigs would be helpful.
I tried to google it but I don't think it's even fit a name.

Thanks
Manny

GRS sells Thermo-Loc plastic sticks which can be melted and formed into cradles for irregular parts. Then they can be used on the next project.

Nothing fancy, but it works. Some u channel that is notched large enough for small vice grips which have leather glued on to the jaws. Also works for dovetails.

I would get a piece of dense foam that might be used for a kydex press or the like. I would then build a clamping jig that looked like:

_______
!....A....!---------------------------------------B
!..........!____________________________C

from the side.

Where A is a wooden ledge to which I can clamp my blade.
B is the top of the foam layer.
C is the wooden frame supporting the foam.
I would make the ledge (A) adjustable in height over the foam (either via some clamping bolts and slots in A, or by having different thickness foam pads.)

I would then either hot glue or tape the bottom scale to the pre drilled blade blank, clamp the blade blank to the ledge (A) with the scale pressing with moderate pressure into the foam layer (B). I would drill it, then do the same procedure for the opposing scale. Throw a locator pin in after the first hole is drilled in each scale, prior to drilling the subsequent hole or holes).

Here is a chunk of channel iron I use, Milled both the bottom of the channel
and the legs of it flat on the same setup. Ken.
