Drive wheel- to crown or not to crown?

Hi guys,

I need to make a new drive wheel for my belt grinder. The previous one was flat but I think it is better if it has a bit of a crown?

What is your take on this? Just how important is a crown on a wheel and how much of a crown is bettter. Does a crown help to prevent the belt from running off to one side when pressure is applied or what is it's main function?

thanks

Mike

Mike, crowning a wheel helps keep the belt from moving around on you. My idler wheel is crowned but not my drive wheel. My drive wheel is a contact wheel though.

Hi Will, thanks for the reply.

I have always had a lot of problems with the belt moving around.

My grinder is home built and without an idler wheel. I guess if you have a crowned idler wheel it does the same job as a crowned drive wheel would?

You say your drive wheel is a contact wheel.....is it rubber coated? If so, dont you get wear on the rubber?
Just curious.

The crown should help your tracking issues since it's a two wheel grinder. You shouldn't get wear on the drive wheel unless you're stopping the belt and letting the drive wheel spin.

Thanks AcridSaint.
As to how much crown-I guess I will have to experiment and see what works best.
