I'm looking at the drop point design in regards to a camp/survival knife....It seems versatile enough to meet a variety of needs. As I mention n most of my threads the uses would be primarily food prep, light Battoning (kindling) small game and fish prep, picking fingernails etc. however being a saltwater sports enthusiast corrosion resistance is a must, so far I've been looking at the:

1)fallkniven f1
2)buck vangaurd
3)benchmade rant
4)benchmade fixed griptillian

as always opinions a suggestions are welcome....Thanks

I'm really liking the look, and price of the benchmade rant 440c steel and the handle can be disassembled from the full tang, perhaps allowing a paracord wrap add a custom kydex sheath and it sounds almost too good to be true unless anyone has any feed back

Bark River has a Loveless-looking item in SS, "River's Edge.". Don't know whether to call it a drop or a clip, but it's nice in the hand and cuts well.

I like the Fallniven F1 and the Benchmade Rant. Been considering buying one of the F1's myself. Take a look at the Spyderco Moran model as another option/choice. It's a nice blade.

I've always thought the Rant was a great buy. I want a Griptilian too -- folder and fixed both. Fallkniven is classy stuff-- good clean Scandavian lines and wonderful steel.

Pretty hard to go wrong with that list!

just tool a look at the spyderco duran...pretty sweet and small I managed to findem for 53 bucks half the msrp I don't know too much about vg 10 steel, the blade is supposedly 1/8 inch thick and has a convex grind...does anyone have one of these, does it seem to fit the requirements I listed above How would the steel hold up with salt water exposure ?? just a few questions...The ones I always ask....Sorry to be redundant. I'm kind of rain-mannish about knives/guns and survival equipment. I suppose everyone has there hangups.

I've had a Cold Steel Stainless Master Hunter for years . I find it extremely practical .For a little longer blade Fallkniven S-1 is also very practical.

Another VG-10 stainless fixed blade in your size range is the Spyderco Moran Featherweight Drop Point, model FB02. Web price should run you $65 (or slightly less) + shipping.

Its 1/8" thick blade should stand up to your light batonning. IME the edge on this model (typical for Spydies?) out-of-box is mighty dang sharp due to having a rather thin shoulder above the edge. Seems to be a great little slicer. Picture & specs at:

HTH.

just tool a look at the spyderco duran...
I tried to Google the Spyderco Duran and drew a blank. Gotta link to pics/specs for one? Or is that a typo for the Moran Featherweight I like so much?

for the prices I'm finding looks like the next comtestant might be either a BM Rant or a Spyderco moran, The BM rant is a red series which I believe is benchmades "lowend "series however it is 440 c steel full tang/drop point, sounds pretty good to me the spyderco is vg 10 steel i don't know anything about that. Is it stainless?? is it durable?easy too sharpen? Does it hold an edge? How does it rate?

I use a Chris Reeves Shadow III. It is a wonderful small knife. It makes the
best fuzz sticks for fire making, I have used mine for food prep, batoned with it for getting at the heart wood of damp wood, and just all round camp
duties. Out of all the custom and production knives I have this is the one knife that is a do it all. You might try one of them. Good luck in your search.

VG-10 is on the higher end of stainless steels. Not as corrosive resistant as 440C but keeps it's edge longer. The Fallkniven's are VG-10 laminate. Not sure what "laminate" means. I have a folder in VG-10 and it's good stuff.

A layer of VG-10 sandwiched between two layers of softer, more corrosion-resistant SS.

I like the buck vanguard it is a good solid knife and a nice slicer.

Look also at the scrapyard Scrapper 6 its about 100 with sheath. it may be a bit larger than these others but its a hard knife to beat at that price.

Just because they haven't been mentioned yet as possibles:
- BM180 Outbounder (D2 3-3/4") approx.$75-$80
- BM190 Hunter (D2 4") approx $75-$80
- BM220 Snody Resistor (154CM 4-1/2") approx $100
- Ontario RAT-5 (1095 4-1/2") approx $85-$90
- Buck Alpha Hunter (ATS34 3-3/4") approx $70

I have the Spydie Moran model. I like it. I only recommend knives I own unless I have direct experience with them. It should do what you want it to do and you'll feel very comfortable using it as an all around blade for camp chores. Light batoning, okay. But it is not made for heavy duty batoning. You would want a larger knife with a thicker steel for that. The sheath is kydex if that makes any difference to you. It's okay. You can slip it off your belt pretty easily. I have mine mounted for cross draw carry angled upward at about 30 degrees or so. It is razor sharp from the factory. If you buy it, I suspect you will find yourself carrying it in the outdoors for general purposes as it can be carried VERY discretely.

I can remember seeing a pic on this forum of a Rant that had snapped,do a bit of searching see if you can find it !!!

Right now Busse is taking orders for the Badger Attack TAC.

5" blade, drop point looks like a good all rounder.

$227 , which is a hunk of money, but, for a Busse, it's within "affordable" striking distance.

Down side is the wait time, but, it looks like it would make a good SRK/Camp/batonner. This one is not swome Mega-CHoppa-Pottomus, buit you can bet it will stand up to most anything you can throw at it.

Sure, it's a chunk of change, but, I look at it from the standpoint that you'd pay that much for your next [2] knives, so, why not combine and have at least one Top-Shelf blade?

and the warranty can't be beat.
