Knife This knife sold - will leave it here for others to view and comment on befor removing unless that's not cool. Let me know.
Order code (use when inquiring so I know what knife!) A-K-fwiblue-1210
Style-function drop point hunter-skinner
Durability extra hard edge for longer sharp life but not good for chopping. Ivory by nature should not be kept wet, so ok to take hunting- but not a daily survival knife
Story or personal info about this knife The blue ivory is very rare, one of the most striking things about the knife. The bronze guard came from a barge propeller that went up and down the Yukon river since the 1950’s.
Price $350 My knives in general I do all my own work unless stated. Cut my own steel , shape blades one at a time freehand- no pattern. Do my own hardening and equalizing. If etched, freehand one of a kind no patterns, using acid. Been using and depending on knives since 1972 as a subsistence person in the remote interior of Alaska. (written two books on the subject) Handle materials are often materials I find myself in my lifestyle – mammoth ivory, bone, horn, fossils etc. If not, I know the source, and material has been personally selected. Guards are usually lost wax cast, my own carved designs, doing my own casting from free scrap metals gifted by our local barge line. Pins usually hand made tubing or copper heavy electrical wire or brazing rod. I make my own sheaths and stands. Often a story in some of it someplace- that helps make the knife one of a kind- personal.
Blade
Type steel --1095
Treated how forged to compress steel structure along the edge, torch heated along the edge- oil quenched- twice drawn at 300 degrees. Back not heat treated. While forging hammered copper and brass into steel so it chemically bonded and is part of the steel. This is done along the back for artistic purpose and has no effect on function or strength of blade
Dimensions overall 10 inches blade 5x 2 x 1/16.
Artwork Blade has acid etched footprints. One side is grizzly bear track, other side the moose track. Bears kill and eat moose so this is a story of survival – a reminder to those who hold the blade. (some days your the bug some days the windshield)
Handle
Material Fossil walrus ivory. Red spacer, end cap is lighter fossil ivory held with two brass pin tubers with copper wire run down the tube so they look like eyes.
Source Ivory from friends in Savonnga Alaska- 1095 steel from Jantz
How handled Some restoration had to be done to the ancient ivory to ensure it remain stable. Put in a vacuum with ‘superglue’ Thus stable and somewhat water resistant.
Artwork Acid etch of blade described under blade above. Guard is a piece of art described under the guard.
Guard-pommel –pins Guard is lost wax cast from my own mold and original art. This is two mammoths walking in a forest. Bronze is off a barge Pins brass tube with copper wire center in end cap no other pins needed- hidden tang style knife
Display or sheath info No sheath or stand provided unless purchased separate inquire if needed
