Drop shutty knives

My Pirate Jack falls shut since it's on bearings and the blade weighs about a pound, it also likes to put little cuts in my finger because of that action.

Great point about the button locks. I have a few knives that drop shut and I have cut the top of my thumb several times just closing the knife. One is a Norseman and the other is my Shirogorov. You really need to be careful when closing these two as they are like guillotines.
Exactly why I don't like drop-shut action on my frame and liner locks. I prefer to shake those shut.

You make a valid point, I do like fall shut action WITH geometry that works with my fat fingers :D
Nothing bit me as much as my 0452, that little flipper tab the short distance between locked/kept open by the detent and falling shut. Not very ideal for me.
The K2 is awesome in that regard, stays open just long enough to comfortably move your thumb away before it closes on its on weight without being a guillotine.

Reate seems to be putting out drop shutty knives.

My liong mah endeavour is certainly drop shutty and now I want to handle an Arius to see how it compares! With enough whiplash I can get it to open without the flipper tab which I don't like but it takes precise movement and I'm not sure if that's just a trait of bearing knives?

I agree. Those thick blades close w/o help, but won't slice as good as a thinner lighter blade.

I should clarify, I don't consider a blade that's armor plating thick or a blade that free swings when the lock is depressed to be drop shutty. Those are just cheating to achieve the action.

I also do have a 562, my 562CF is in my pocket at the time of writing this, and is pretty drop shutty.

I made the mistake of getting a Skaha, and I'm not totally hooked on drop shut action. I have a few others, the ZT 0562CF, the Quartermaster Mr Roper Eviction (Jared West is scum, but WE makes a good friggin knife), and the Stedemon BP02. Of course there's axis locks that free swinging, but that's different. Are there other drop shutty folders and flippers for less than customs?
Still have the Skaha? I’ve been curious to try one out but can’t seem to find any. I just missed one on here the other day

Was it the one that came up for $115? That's the one I bought, saw it and couldn't claim it fast enough.

Another one I thought of is the highly underrated ZT 0220. Super drop shutty.

A little Nano Oil and slight adjustments to the pivot and you can make almost any good knife fly open and drop shut. I have about 80 knives not including fixed blades and I must say that most of them drop shut. This did not happen by itself it takes a little practice but once you get the hang of it. Their are a ton of video's of collectors taking apart knives. Nick Shabazz has many video's of taking apart knives. If you want some more info on this subject send me a PM and I would be delighted to fill you in.

I think there is a fine line between too drop shutty and drop shut. IMO, I don't like knife that drop shut and bounce. I love the feeling of knife that drop shut and stay shut, it feels to me more solid and I think it is hard to make a knife drop shut but does not bounce.
Also, the flipper tab position is important. It should be in a position where it will drop on my finger when I unlock the knife so the blade won't bite me but it has to give enough space for the detent ball to sit on the blade so when I take my finger out, the knife drop shut. Oh, and it should not be too much of a pocket pecker.
Just my 2cents

Another vote for the Freeman 451. It's unreal how smooth this knife is. And it looks really good, too IMO. I love mine. It's one knife I'll never let go of.

If it was lefty, I'd already have one. I might even have 2. Sadly I'm kinda hard pressed on knives over around $150 to consider anything without a lefty clip.

That's understandable. Too bad he doesn't make a lefty version. It keeps a lot of people from enjoying this knife.

I just sent the maker an email asking about the possibility of making a scale with a lefty clip. If nothing else, it puts one more in the pile of people who have expressed interest in a lefty version, and could be the teetering point to push him into doing it... or worst case scenario I only wasted like 2 minutes.

How do the Hogue button locks fare? Particularly the X5's? Freeman gets seemingly more exposure than Hogue it seems.

If the blade drops shut and bounces, it is most likely because the knife has weak detent; it has little to do with the knife being too smooth.

I have an X1 Microflip and it's a pretty great mini flipper. Been waiting to snatch up an X5 for a while if I can't get one for a good price, but the only times any come up is when I have no money.
