Dropped my EDC knife... In a urinal...

So I carry a Gerber GhostStrike as my EDC knife and while using a public bathroom I learned I didn't have it clicked right into the sheath. Out it comes, scarily close to my uh best friend, to land in the urinal I was using. After fishing it out and washing it the best I could in burger kings bathroom I realized I'm going to need to sterilize it, after all it cuts my food...

How can I sterilize my knife without damaging it? Would boiling water work?

Yes, safest option for the steel (bleach may rust it) is to bring a pot of water to a rolling boil, and put the knife in it for 2 to 3 mins. Make it 5 if you're paranoid. :) This is also how you sterilize things in the field/camping, as long as they can stand up to the heat. Remember, the knife will be 212+ degrees F when you take it out. Higher if you left it sitting on the bottom, so just watch yourself. If its a non-stainless (and if you're me, even if it IS a stainless) put a coat of oil on it, and you're good to go. Vegetable oil is best if you use it for food prep.

Okay great, I was worried about the rubber on the handle being able to take the heat. The paracord wrap will be removed and replaced :D I feel like an idiot... I'm always very careful with my knives.

I love my GhostStrike, the only reason my hand went into a public urinal..

LOL its a great story. Believe me, we've all done stupid crap with our knives. Just two nights ago in fact, I left a one of my Demko's sitting on the arm of the couch (open, like an idiot), knocked it off by accident, didnt' know it was falling, and it hit my foot point first! Cut the back of 4th toe open, right at the knuckle! 3 stitches later I'm fine, so don't feel bad. As long as the knife isn't damaged during those mindless moments, its all good. (lol We'll heal.) Oh, and the rubber should handle it just fine. All the plastic/rubber utensils in the kitchen have no trouble with the heat of boiling water.

Ouch that would really suck! I've dropped mine before but all it did was break the tip a little, once I clean the knife I'll post a pic of the tip. I don't use it for stabbing though and it's a barely noticeable bit of the tip. Landed point down on ceramic tile..

Oh man...well sharpening it back to a nice point shouldn't be so hard. Let me know if you need some pointers there. I also have an Edge Pro. Considering the "spill" it took, if you feel like shipping it to the States, I'll sharpen it up for you for free, as long as you can cover return shipping. You probably have someone closer though.

I know that sounds funny, but I'm at the shipper almost every day, so if a knife came in, it would just come home with me. Then 10 mins on the sharpener, and then it'd come back to the shipper with me. People have done some nice stuff for me on the forums, so I try to pay it forward.

The piece that came off was only like 1/32 of an inch, my crappy drag through sharpener has almost taken care of it. I like to carry the pocket sharpener as part of my EDC kit. It's not the greatest but gives me a good working edge. I want to learn to sharpen my knives properly though since my kukri kinda needs it lol

I tried watching YouTube videos but I'm not willing to mess up my 300 dollar hand made knife. I've been trying to find someone local I can trust to do a good job. My friend offered but his idea of sharpening is to run it over the bench grinder...

God don't let him! lol. Well if you run out of options there, I'm happy to help. I pimp knives, have done stonewashing, anodizing, removed flippers, added choils, ground skull crusher pommels on round-butted knives, etc. Sharpening's the easy part. :)

There are also plenty of guys on the forum. Maybe put the word out.

Yeah good idea if all else fails I'll have to ship it off but I'd prefer to get it done while I wait since I use my kukri all the time while camping and my camping trips happen on short notice. The pocket sharpener does a good enough job on my EDC blade.

Boiling water should be fine. Gross as it may be, you're better off dropping it in urine than just about any other bodily fluid. Not nearly as many nasty microorganisms live in urine as do in blood.

Don't use the carbide scrapers, they are junk and tear metal away from your knife, rather than sanding it away. Spray it with bleach solution let it sit for a few seconds and rinse and dry. Good as new.

If it fell in a toilet I think I'd leave it and warn an employee it's there... Janitorial staff can deal with it...

Yeah I have the smith's pocket pal and mostly use the ceramic side, it said the other side is only used if you really dull the knife. Haven't really dulled it further than cutting paracord in two strokes. A couple of pulls through the ceramic side when the blade takes two swipes to cut the paracord brings it back pretty sharp. I was always told a dull knife could be more dangerous than a sharp one, presumably due to the extra force behind it. I'd also hate to have a dull blade when I really need a sharp one.

Dude I'm going to have to report you to the People for the Ethical Treatment of Knives. Let's see...you used a pull through sharpener, broke the tip, piss on it and to top it off threaten to bench grind it. Oh the horrors...horrors I tell ya.

I did drop it and pee on it and used a pull through sharpener... However I did not threaten it with a bench grinder, my buddy did and I said no lol!

I use the pull through because it's my only option and it hasn't hurt my knife worse than dropping it. I don't use the carbide side which from what I've read is what causes most issues. I'll end up breaking it one day because I actually use it... I do want a new knife though...
