Dropping the (gun-knife) during a wild animal attack

Stuff like this makes me sad. Nothing against hunting for food etc. but this was just a masacre. I was routing for the Lion :(

Completely agree. "Brave Soul", give me a break. 5 pussies kill a beautiful creature to feel like men is more like it.

Hi guys
When I posted those vids, I did it to show how fast the animal attacks and how fast one will be on the ground.

I dont think our reflexes can match those of cats or bears. We can easily loose our gun or knife.
I did not post them to discuss the (right/wrong) of shooting animals.
Thanks

I've spent a lot of time in the Yukon and the Dept. of Renewable Resources used to issue the same kind of warning about Barren Ground Griz. Not much to eat on the tundra and they seem to consider any animal as food. The DoRR usually underplays risks from wildlife but they said to stay far clear of Barren Ground Griz as well as polar bears.

Reminded me of this story.

Good find! I recall reading those accounts and they were indeed worrisome.

Most of my rafting/canoeing has been well south of the Brooks Range but I did spend a little time on the North Slope when I drove to Deadhorse in '93. I saw only one Barren Ground Griz and it was headed away from me. Even with a 1,000 mm lens I got only a fuzzy image of its backside.

One thing I noted was that this bear had a slightly unusual walking motion. A bit more like a polar bear walk than that of a coastal brownie. When I later read about hybrids, I wondered whether this animal might have had a little polar bear in its genetic makeup.

Never mind defending yourself against a polar bear, but have some understanding of them. They are one of the few animals on the planet that will stalk, kill, and eat humans without provocation. They are an odd animal. I laugh when I hear all the sob stories about their plight. Do not get me wrong, I believe the world would be a lesser place without them, its just the misrepresentation, or onesidedness, of the propaganda that gets me. The flight or fight reflex is a day to day variable with humans.

Apologies bushcraft, it's just something that I feel very strongly about. As for the original subject, yeah self defense can be a very dangerous thing. A can of bear mace in the hands of a very panicked individual can also make a bad situation worse.

I think that self defense precautions should only be utilized if an individual is EXTREMELY confident in their skill level and ability to remain level headed.
