It's been bitterly dry here in the Smoky Mountains. So much so that there are backwoods campsites in the park that are closed due to lack of water. It's gotten me thinking about water procurement. In particular, I've been wondering about using clear bags and tree respiration to gather water. Has anybody actually used this method? It would be great if knowledgeable guru type could post pics.:)

I don't do guru and that's probably why it worked out badly form me. I tried using Beech. It would work at the investment level - lay out a big load of bags and come back to harvest in a few days, but short term, nah. Over a 24hr period I'd gather more water by walking through morning dew in just socks and wringing them into a cup.

I have tried it too and only got a few ounces each time. Not only is it a low volume producing method ~ it usually ends up not being very clean (pollen, bugs, dust). Agree with baldtaco about the dew if you get caught without a watersource. A bandana and/or sponge can be a valuable tool.

However, in the smokies if you get to a low enough elevation you should be able to find water, hence a topo map could be your best friend.

BTW, I have made a solar still too ~ not worth the sweat and calories for the yield.
