Drum Stove Question

Didn't know where to stick this, but I figured people here would be more apt to know. Move it if you think it belongs somewhere else.

I was thinking about building one of those oil drum wood stoves from the kits, to keep on hand as a backup this winter as I lose electricity frequently. I looked around but couldn't find a definitive answer. Do the kits bolt on or is a bit of welding required? :confused:
 
Look at the kifaru and titanium goat site. You can get an idea how to make one by examining how the commercially available ones are put together.

Thanks Kev. I'm a bit lazy for all that work though ;). The kit can be pulled out of the mailbox and drums are easy to come by. From the pics, I would imagine the doors bolt or get riveted, but I'm not sure, and the stack has me confused.
 
the kits i have seen have required: cutting (as with a jigsaw or sawzall), drilling and bolting.

In any case,any kit you buy comes with instructions
 
My thoughts on the stoves built from water heaters is that a water heater is small in diameter to build a firebox out of.They are a heavier wall than a 55 gallon drum but one of the secrets to getting more years of use out of a barrel stove is to put 3 or 4 inches of sand in the bottom so the ash isn't right against the barrel.I've burnt barrel stoves for 5 or 6 years before they needed replacing,we built one out of a 250gal fuel oil tank to heat a hog farrowing house,that thing worked great,it would take logs 4ft long.:D
