My buddy has 60 pounds on me, so when we were standing around the camp fire with a couple cold ones and he decided to wrestle, I knew I was going for a ride. But I'm craftier from my back and baited him with a gogoplata so that he would defend it and in the process position me for a triangle choke. Of course, given his strength advantage, he would try to slam his way out, but I'd latched on and would certainly get the tap eventually. Luckily, my other buddy, interrupted the action and I shudder to think about what would have happened if he hadn't.

My trusty Mora, jostled out of it's worn out sheath, had come loose and was standing straight up at my side, waiting to impale me on its point. *shudder*

It was time for a new everyday fixed blade, and one with some reliable sheath retention.

Having recently purchased a Condor Lochnessmuk for tree limbing I decided on their Rodan model which is basically a poor man's bk2. I ordered from Amazon but cancelled realizing that the area between the blade and the handle was going to bother my OCD, so I started looking dreamily at the Becker's despite them being outside my price range.

By some twist of fate, the BK15 was significantly cheaper than the other tweeners, I believe by accident, since it was 25 dollars more when I checked back moments after ordering. Either way, I was excited enough to refuse the free shipping and pay a couple dollars to get it faster.

It arrived today and I'm a convert. I spent 5 hours this afternoon carving maple handle scales before cracking one in half while mounting it (it was my first time making these, disappointing, but I learned a lot).

Here it is with its new family, the Condor I mentioned and a neck knife by Nighthaxen and a fixed blade by Austin Goldman, both bladeforums members I admire and support in my little way.

And another pic during my failed handle scale project. Tomorrow's another day.

...

Bah, my internet is only through cell phone towers out here in the bush and isn't as enthusiastic as I am to upload pics. I'll post them later and my story now, before I screw up and have to retype this for the fourth time.

Welcome aboard, I also have a 15, and knives from Suwanee knife co (Nighthaxan) and Austin Goldman and a mora companion. I have been interested in getting a Condor too.

You have some pretty good taste in knives. The 5, though it looks similar, is an entirely different beast and is Definitely worth the coin. So is the 4.

I mention them since the 4, 5, and 15 are going discontinued. Grab then while you can.

Again, welcome aboard. Tomorrow I will post up my holdman and my Suwanee.

And, yes, I realize wrestling while having a worn out Mora on your belt in its stock sheath is probably more of a sign to stop drinking than to get a bigger knife.

the BK15 is being discontinued, so is in the value range.

though, it pains me to think that if a Becker is out of a price range, then most knives are.

it's a fighter, for sure.

Thanks for the suggestions. If I could return the favor, in terms of wanting a Condor, in my taste the Kephart, Sapien (sp?), and, the most popular, Bushlore are the best smaller blades. Would prefer the small Nessmuk if I felt the sheath looked built for it, would recommend the Bushcraft Basic in 4" but I like more separation between handle and blade. Thanks for the welcome friend.

It's funny, I live a really simple life, fixing up an old shitty house with the cheapest tools that do the job, don't really care much about material shit. Figured over time I'd step up my tools, so I started with a knife and got stuck there. Discovered this world and now I have all these wicked knives and my crappy old reciprocating saw won't work. Browsing this site is one of the only times I wish I had more money.

thing is, a mora is a heck of a knife... damn fine.

all you need it a better sheath?

Oh, I know a new sheath for the Mora would do the job for cheaper, I just mean that I caught the addiction for nice knives. I only have a couple, but I've checked the knifemaker s fixed blade forum everyday for years.

I eventually want to get a larger model Becker but I've always had clip points before the 15, so I don't necessarily need the 5, although a part of me is satisfied with the pairing of them.

What would you recommend for a larger model?

Drunken Jui Jitsu is soley responsible for half my knife purchases. Small world...:D
Congrats on the new 15! She's a dandy!
Welcome! Stick around and have some fun.

The unsuspecting Mora, still unaware it's betrayal has sealed it's fate, and the failed scales it unknowingly carved for its replacement.

new 15 with the new "worry stone" I pulled out of the river round here. Any guesses what the material is? Feels too light to be a rock, bone maybe?

Congrats on the new blade, I'd suggest maybe finding a kydex sheath for your mora, 'tis a shame to waste such a good knife simply because of a poor-retaining sheath. I don't belt-carry one, but I have one in my bag on all hikes simply for redundancy sake.

Oh yeah, the Mora's been on my belt for several years, they'll be a place for it even in my post Becker world. It's done everything I've ever asked of it and a few things I haven't. Got a dandy scar on my left index finger from it to remind me to always carve outwards even when it's awkward. The extra blade length on the BK15 will take a little getting used to, but I can tell all ready how nice it will fit in after its initial introduction.

Thank you and welcome..... The Fifteen is an extremely versatile blade and should be a big help....

The denizens of this little patch cyberspace LOVE pix.....LOL, me too..... Let us know how it performs, please.......

(15 minutes of starstruck silence)

I'll keep you posted for sure about my experience transitioning to this knife. I'll make a thread about my next attempt at carving scales too and document it with lots of photos. Thanks so much for your time.

Congrats on your first.

Don't be afraid to use it, it's a really handy blade and is better for hard use than most give it credit for.
