I have a large leg bone from a steer my son butchered. My ? is how do I dry it so i can use it for handle material
Any is greatly appericated Leroyk

If its fresh boil for 2 hours then put in over at 180ºF for 4 hours. Skip the boiling step if the bone is at some degree of "natural drying." Hope this helps.

If you're not after white and would enjoy some natural colorations, throw it in a robust compost pile (hot fermenting manures & stable bedding would be dynamic) for a few months. It will pull out the fats yet emphasize the "earthiness and rawness" of the substance! Otherwise...boiling, bleach, lye or peroxides are some typical approaches. Some folks give ants or beetles a go. Dehydrators can aid with drying natural substances with minimal adverse (distortion) impact.

Great advice, Phil. I must also add that a bucket of pond water left out in the hot sun will deflesh and clean bone well. An acquaintance of mine keeps barrels of swamp water just for this purpose.

thanks for the advice. It has been in the freezer for about a year. I think I will go with the boil and oven method. Leroyk
