Hi all,

I'm looking to make a list of folders that are dual ground and can be made dual edge because the blade is fully enclosed by the handle when closed (think Gerber a/f combat and covert folders) Pics/links would be great too :D

Darcus, while double edged folders are a cool idea please be aware that carrying a double edged knife is illegal in most places. Good luck on your collection.

Why not have your knife modified in a way that you cut all the blade off that sits above the handle when closed. I will post pics when I get home, using my iPhone to post.

Ag Russell sells the folding sting. I believe it is currently shipped with only 1 side fully sharpened. If you choose to, you can sharpen the other side yourself.

Not only that, but I'd be worried about the user safety issue more than anything. Unless it's something like a OTF auto, you're going to have a hard time closing a double edged folder. Even if the cutting edge lies beneath the liners you could still get cut reaching into your pocket.

unless, you don't intend to carry these knives. In that case, go for it and have fun with your collection.

I'm definitly buying that Sting. Double edge capable, waved, framelock... What more could I want?

on second thought... not tip up

BM 630... I made it waved and double edged and tip up. Then sent it to Richard J and he made it a whole lot sharper. I edc'd this for a few years. Had no problems or accidents.

Spyderco G10 Police... I waved it too.

I'm contemplating grinding it flush with the handle and making it double edge as well.

I would be concerned about limiting utility and safety issues with this. Not to mention the serious legal issues involved. Whatever you do don't get in trouble and be careful.

K-Bar Dozier Thorn would work if you can find one. That being said, I would seriously rethink what you want to do as double edged knives are illegal to carry most everywhere.

Two people have stated that
double edged knives are illegal to carry most everywhere.
. Where are they illegal? I know Indiana does not specify a double edge knife as being illegal to carry, they list only gravity knives, switchblades, throwing stars, and ballistic knives as being illegal. Is the statement "double edged knives are illegal to carry most everywhere. " actually true or just an oft repeated generic warning that people have picked up and passed along? I know that some States are fine with carrying most any folding knife until you are forced to use it in self-defense at which point it magically changes from a knife to a concealed weapon/deadly weapon etc.

What does your stat say on the double edge issue? For the basics you can look here: http://knife-expert.com/sta-law.htm

I think there is a common misconception about "double edged" knives being illegal when in fact, in many places, they are not. If you were to ask 'John Q. Public,' or perhaps even 'John Q. LEO,' in California, if "double edged" knives were illegal, they would most likely answer "yes," when in fact they are not.

Part of the problem in California, I've discovered, has to do with section 12020 of the Penal Code, which prohibits concealed carry of "dirks and daggers," which most people mistakenly believe are "double edged" knives. In California, the definition of "dirk or dagger" is "any sharp-bladed instrument capable of ready use as a stabbing weapon." Folding knives are only considered "dirks or daggers" when their blades are locked open and ready for use (which would be a pretty painful way of carrying a concealed folder:D).

So, under California's State Laws, there is nothing prohibiting owning or carrying a double edged fixed blade, provided it's not carried concealed. Also, there is nothing in California's State Laws prohibiting owning or carrying a double edged folding knife, provided it is not carried concealed in the open and locked position, and is not in violation of PC 653 k, which covers "switchblades and gravity knives." Please note, County and Municipal Ordinances do vary, so while carrying a double edged knife under State Law may be alright, it may be in violation of County and Municipal Ordinances. Also note that the carrying/possession of various types and sizes of knives in certain areas (State/Federal buildings and Schools) is also legislated.

I appreciate the responses and the legality warnings. While the laws in my state do NOT classify double edged folders as illegal to carry (specifically anyway) I would certainly be hesitant to carry one due to uhh.."misperceptions" by any given LEO.

Ronsec: A recent post here re: the Dozier Thorn is actually what prompted me to post this...I just really appreciate the symmetrical design of it and the gerber a/f's.

solidsoldier: cool mods, thanks for the pics!

The MOD CQD Mk1 and Mk2 are both able to have their false edge sharpened.

The Boker AFD and EFD are fully enclosed in the handle too.
Any OTF can as well but manual ones are few and far between.

Try picking up a Spyderco Worker, those had a small double edge on top that was sunk below the blade.

That being said, good luck finding one. :)

Oh, I almost forgot, double edge knives are strictly legislated in most states.

DE knives are illegal for carry in TX for sure, some states class DE knives as daggers/dirks too making them illegal to carry, i would wager they are illegal in more states than they are legal.
