One thing i carry in my woodskit is a tin of BURTS BEES hand Salve. Keeps my face and hands from chapping, works well as an antiseptic cream for first aid and as i just discoverd, it burns VERY WELL

Primary ingredients are: Birch oil, Almond oil, Olive oil, beeswax, Vit E, Comfrey Root extrac, rosemary oil, lavadin oil, Euctalyptis oil.

we all know how fast Eucalyptus bushes burn...( CA wildfires)

so i put some BURTS BEES on a cotton ball, sparked it with the firsteel, and man it burns well.

an EXCELLENT multipurpose item to place into the woods kit.

EDIT: smells really nice when burning too..... :)

I use that stuff too, love it. That's funny that you tested it because I was just wondering the other day if it would burn. Thanks for finding out for me. My only concern carrying it in my kit is that my kit often rides in my car in the TN heat.

Now if they offered it in a tube similar to carmex I would be all over it in my kit.

That is why I carry petroleum jelly in the plastic tube. I can put it on my lips when they are chapped, and on the cotton ball when I'm cold.

put a ranger band (innertube piece) around the tins circumfrence, no more leaks.

Other stuff that burns well:

- BADGER BALM (lee valley tools)
- some wax basd chapsticks
- the GF's lipstick, (though not that well depending on composition)

and a tampon from the FAK soaked with petroleum jelly. Burned about 20 minutes with a large flame.

I remember a while back somebody on here made a candle out of a chapstick tube

another two to add to the list:

- FILSONs oil finish wax (tin cloth reproofing wax)
- Outback Company reproofing cream (as above)

Also add concentrated DEET solution to this list. Doesn't smell so great, but when in need of fuel that stuff burns pretty darn good - unfortunately not as long lasting as waxes and PJ though.

add OBENAUFS LP boot dressing as well. I know i always have a bit of that in the pack....

Good post man, your always posting new innovative ways to get by in the outdoors.

Keep up the good work, so us lazy, less imaginative guys don't have to do it.:D

Will have to try the carmax I currently carry in my bushbag. I bet it will.

Oh, it will.:D

Funny how we "eye" everything with a "what if" process going on in our heads. I was just thinking about the Burt's Bees salve the other night too. Carmex crossed my mind a while back and I have used anti-biotic ointment for fire-starting and "corrosion-proofing" my trailer light connectors in a pinch.

That reminds me, I need to buy some more anti-biotic ointment.:o

Where can you get this Burt's Bee salve?

online or at health food stores, or similar. Actually a lot of places like SAMS or WALMART might ven carry it.....

it works REALLY well on dry outdoors hands, smells manly and well just plain works.

I've even found it in a display at one of the big book stores. Look for the small "sample" size tins. They're just a big bigger than a quarter and would fit well in a kit.

It really is good stuff. Didn't know about the antiseptic properties though.
