dual survivor, winkler?

I had the belt knife but recently sold it, I have since regretted selling it. The balance and ergonomics of it are amazing. I will be buying another. Mr.Winkler makes a fine knife for sure.
Agreed, now back to that winkler! Personally, I think he makes a very nice knife. I've had the field myself and really liked it. It's one of the knives I regret selling...

I was waiting for someone to say it. I like Matt graham better though. I do think cody is a brilliant survivalist.

I'm a army vet as well got out 2012, Michael hawke was Joe teti's commander and has publicly called Joe out about lying about military service. There was a thread with links a few weeks ago, apparently there going to court so hopefully the truth will come out with. There's a bunch of info out there on the subject check it out. I don't like lying to inflate military service. period.

Here's some info and links in this thread

Here's a link to the army times on him being booted from the special forces association

As a vet you should frown upon that crap as well.

Wait so it says that teti served under hawke. Maybe that's why their knife designs are so similar yet so bad lol

It was definitely a Winkler! Specifically, it was a Winkler II Belt Knife with maple handle and tribal markings with the caswell finish.

The best part is he upgraded from his TOPS to get the high carbon benefits of spark and chopping....great episode.

My understanding of the the controversy is that it revolves around the fact that Teti said he's a "combat veteran" and Hawke took exception to that because Teti was never deployed while in the U.S. Military. This is true and Teti admits it, however, Teti DID see action during his time as a private contractor. So I guess it's all semantics, I guess it's all about whether you think a "combat veteran" is only someone whose seen action while actively serving in the military. My feeling is that these two never liked each other from the beginning.

Personally I'd say combat is combat. The bullets and risk of death are just as real as a contractor as they are as a marine. I like Joe on the show but man that knife was like the opposite of what I'd want in the woods. Mykel Hawke's is even worse

I agree with your position. What boggles my mind is that they are selling that "survival" knife for $300 and the steel is 440C (other stainless steel options can make the price go to $600 and they only sell in stainless). Smh.

The winkler belt knife is a great knife and I will own one soon.

a lie is a lie... if he did see combat as a private contractor it may be hard to verify. there is a LOT of BS in the private contractor world. I always find it funny that people put so much emphasis on the fact that someone has "combat experience" in regards to designing a knife. What is the difference if someone has been shot at and how does that affect them being able to put ANY input into a knife. They have NOTHING in common, but everyone puts so much weight in their opinions. someone who works with a blade to do bushcraft and survival scenarios and has experience putting knives to work as they were intended should take priority over someone who carried one around on their belt kit and likely never used it for it's intended purpose. just a thought.

See that's the thing, all the people I know who've ever had real combat experience would never want attention drawn to that, whether military or gangsters. Therefore when people do something on TV requiring someone to be openly recognized it attracts folks who like the attention and are more likely to embellish if not outright lie about their experiences.

I laugh tho cuz Cody is all Mr peaceful hippie but I think he'd whoop on both spec ops dudes from the show...

Winkler or not, I have to say the Bear and Grin It episode of Dual Survivor was about the stupidest one I've watched. All the paranoia by Joe about black bears in the woods, how often does a black bear attack anyone in Pennsylvania? And eating chestnuts? Ever hear of chestnut blight? That was one rare tree they found. Don't even get me started on roping down a cliff in a survival situation.

From what I remember its definitely not a belt knife, I think it was a field knife.

I miss Cody...

I recently started watching this show. I started with watching older episodes with Cody and Dave. I wasn't crazy about Dave before the show. Then I saw a few of the episodes with Cody and Joe. Although I don't care for Dave a whole lot I dislike Joe even more. That' a no brainer. :) I do like Matt Graham though. Ultimately I'd like to see a show with Cody Lundin and Matt Graham. I don't feel that you have to have combat experience to be able to survive in the wilderness.

I agree. The men and women I know with combat experience aren't big on drawing attention to that.

I was cracking up watching Joe talk about being from those woods and being terrified by the black bears there. Big ol "spec ops combat veteran" scared to death by forest critters.

The Black Bear thing in the PA episode was definitely humorous as was the Chestnut. New American Chestnut trees spring up all the time, but the blight is still present and they seldom get very large as compared to when the Chestnut dominanted Eastern forests.

I can't tell if Teti's reactions to situations is Teti or something he is creating for the show. The rattlesnake episode with Cody always gets a laugh from me as does his focus on defense and making a spear or something early in the survival effort. I respect military service. I DO NOT think that military service or training is necessary or particularly appealing on these shows like Dual Survival.

Regardless of how much combat experience Joe has or has not gotten, I don't think he has much survival training before this show. He almost comes off to me as a kid from the burbs who wants to think his backyard was some insane jungle.
IMO, just looking at the knife he carries for "survival" tells me alot about his true experience vs the image he is trying to put forth.

^ is that the tanto fixed blade your seeing? I think a tanto is the last knife id want in the woods. That's why when smoky mtn had those mikel hawke knives, it was a real joke. that was the worst series and most gimmicky of survival knives marketed to date. Ive seen a lot of eposides of live free or die, most of them use what look like bird & trout type knives or scandi style knives,or Russell green river type knives, and these people are living out there for years, not just a few days or a week.Much more sensible knives than the ones mentioned above.

Same, at first I didn't like Dave much, but I did prefer him to Grylls. Then I saw the Norway episode with Joe & Cody. That was the most infuriating single thing I've seen from him. :barf:

The starting scenario had Joe already halfway down a crevasse, Cody up top, backpack on the opposite wall of Joe, and loosening anchors.
Cody tries to tell him to get up quick before the anchors give out but Mr. Joe "Rambo" Teti argues that he needs to swing his rope to grab the bag..

Now I'm no vet, but I am an experienced rock climber. ANCHORS TAKE PRIORITY ALWAYS. Literally nothing was stopping him from coming up, going to the other side of the he hole, resetting the anchors, and retrieving the bag.

Nothing except his ego and the studio execs, smh.
Cody, Matt, and Les Stroud are the most reliable with Dave not far behind Imo.
At least Dave came clean with his record and is now involved with Pathfinder school, which teaches actual skills with no TV agendas whatsoever
