Duck as a survival food?

i saw a guy here wrap a duck, feathers and all , in clay mud. Buried it in the coals for awhile. when it was done an hour or so later he cracked the clay open, and pulled. All the feathers stuck to the clay aas did the skin.

Supposed to work for snakes and fish as well.

The only duck I've ever had was store bought, and I didn't much like it. I'd love to get out duck hunting though, and try some wild duck. Plus duck hunting just seems like a blast.

Hahahahaha.
My dad loves duck and goose and used to have a place on a golf course in SW , VA
I used to go stay with him and snipe the critters with a bow and arrow at 3 AM.
Man. Fun daze.
Long long time ago:(

I've had wild duck once and that was enough for me. I really don't get why people like to hunt them so much, seems boring - but there must be something appealing about it...

Ducks cook up real nice in a dutch oven as well. And yes they do have a good amount of fat, at least the wild ones around here do.

I always just gut em, pluck em, singe em and cook em in the dutch oven. You can stew em as well which also gets you all the fat. Which is critical in a survival scenario.

Just from a survival standpoint they are fairly easily taken with traps and even with baited hooks. Same with Geese only they can be taken with a throwing stick if you hit them while they are on the ground around dusk.

What's the statute of limitations on hunting ducks out of season?

I knew a kid, yeah that's it, knew a kid who had a really turbulent home life. He had a "fort" out in the woods where he pretty much lived. Ducks were on the menu, often. Duck season? Old Bay mostly, salt and garlic sometimes, really good stuffed with orange wedges. Slow roasted with the fat frying the skin to a crisp.

You want to talk about duck as a survival food AND going to jail for a long time, I am about to give some information about how to do both.

Wild ducks are suckers for a trot line baited with corn. Yes, I think it is disgusting catching ducks on a baited hook, but if I was truly starving? :(

Ducks are kinda like deer, the longer you let them hang, the better they taste. To the guy that thinks hunting ducks is boring I would assume you dont hunt. Try shooting a duck out of the sky flying 50 mph with no tail wind and then tell me its boring. Oh well, I'm just prejudiced.

I doubt any of us would be arrested for whacking a duck or two in a survival situation. And if we would, there is FOOD in jail. :D

That actually seems a very intelligent and efficient way of doing it. While the trap works by itself, the survivor can be gathering material for a fire, shelter, or whatever.

I always thought that the way to avoid protein poisoning was to eat the organs of the animal.
Say your drifting out as sea in a life raft and only have fish to eat. If you eat the internal organs, eyes, brains, roe, skin, etc you'll live a lot longer than if you just ate the fillets.
Is there truth to this? Is it applicable to rabbit/fowl as well?
