Any1 have the Byrd duck foot sharpener? Been wanting to get one to serve as my "mobile version" of the Sharpmaker so I can take it backpacking, etc.

I have one. It works well and is compact. I think it'd serve the function you are looking for very well.

I have one and use it mainly for serrations and recurves.

For carry, I use a one of the 4 inch Fallkniven sharpeners, though.

Its a size thing.

I haven't gotten the Duckfoot sharpener yet. But it is on my list to be sure. I have just about every sharpening device that Spyderco ever made including the old original Galley V sharpener. Spyderco's sharpening equipment is just as high quality as it's knives and other products are.

I think one of the most overlooked and under-appreciated sharpeners that Spyderco makes is their 701 Profile kit. I have 3 of them. That is one of the most versatile sharpening tools I've ever own. My biggest wish for a new Spyderco sharpening device would be for them to make a 701 Profile stone in diamond.

I am looking forward to the duckfoot

Now we're talking. I use my 701 sets the most of any of my various sharpener dodads.

You know "orthogonal1" what confuses the hell out me is the fact that every person I ever turned on to the 701 Profile kit usually ends up liking it enough to immediately buy one. They sharpen the Spyderco serrations a bit better than the 204 Sharpmaker IMO. Now I will admit that they are time consuming and do take a bit more patience and aquired skill to use. But I have 2 SE Spyders in my EDC line up that I keep razor sharp and I don't use anything but the 701 Profiles on them. I can't for the life of me understand why they won't consider make a 701 stone in diamond like they did for the 204 Sharpmaker.

You can take the 701 Profiles in the field with you and sharpen virtually any blade with them. I do find the 204 to be a bit faster to use on wavy serrations like their kitchen blades but my SE blade on my big Spyderco Dyad has never been touched by any sharpener other than the 701 Profile kit.

If they won't make a 701 stone in diamond I do wish that they would consider making one with a very coarse grit. That would be ideal for a field kit. I'm in no way trying to disrespect the 204 sharpmaker because it is a genius invention to be sure. I use a 204 kit on something just about every day. They are fabulous for tuning up a plain edge and they are the "cat's meow" for recurve PE blades to be sure.

I'd like to see a coarser ceramic stone in and of itself.

The gray/brown ceramics seem to be about as coarse as ceramics go. Probably a technical issue.

Has anyone seen Spyderco's new Goldenstone (308F) sharpening stone? There was an article about it in last month's Blade magazine, but I haven't seen any dealers showing it in stock yet. It looks like a very interesting portable tool. More than double the cost of the sharpmaker though.

I've seen it and it should make a good companion to a Duckfoot.

Cost is an issue and it would serve the same function as the fine 701 rod does for me.

I'm really liking the Profile set I picked up a few weeks ago. Them and a good coarse diamond stone and maybe a strop are all you really need for a nice edge.

Spyderco are truly pioneers in the field of advanced sharpening systems. The 204 kit is truly genius to say the least. The 701 Profiles are to me the very best serrated blade sharpening kit on the market that is in the manual sharpening category. Well sharpened serrations made a believer out of me.
I can't wait to get the duckfoot sharpener and this new Goldenstone you guys spoke of.

By the way which month's issue of BLADE was the article on the Goldenstone?

I have the 701 Profile stones ( I use them almost exclusively ). I no longer have a Sharpmaker, and I just got ( about a month ago ) a Ducksfoot Sharpener. I like it but I've not used it much.

It seems kinda coarse to me. I have a coarse diamond DMT stone that I use to get my main edge first and the ducksfoot seems more coarse than that does. Weird.

It was either November or December, sorry I don't have my copy anymore, my dog had an accident on it and I threw it out :(

It was a short PR piece, but it had an interesting bit about Sal having invented it years ago, but they were only just recently able to create the ceramics in the right shape (if I recall the wording correctly). Perhaps Spyderco has a copy of the article somewhere on their web site.

The Duckfoot will get finer as you use it. Like too many diamond sharpeners, the stones eventually pull out. Still, I like the Duckfoot.

The "Duckfoot" sharpener (byrd) and the Golden Stone sharpener (Spyderco) have the same shape.

The original idea was invented in 1978 about the same time as the Tri-Angle Sharpmaker. The technology wasn't available to make them at that time. We patented the shape in the late 90's and began making them a couple of years ago. We sat on the concept for more than 30 years waiting for the technology to catch up with the thought.

The Golden Stone is, at this time, very expensive, but is is a very versatile stone that carries easily. I travel with a combination of the Duckfoot and Golden stone. I'm also working on a stand to keep the stone perpendicular for very thin angles.

Sal, That Golden Stone does look like a nice, very compact travel-kit. I do have the Sharpmaker, and also the set of 4 files (400F) which are pretty compact. Do you have an estimate of when the Golden Stone will be available? All the sites I've looked at have been out of stock or not even have it listed yet.

We've got them in stock. They're waiting on me to approve of a DVD (still shots) for instruction.

I'll get right on that. :o

Mr Glesser is it even in the realm of possibility that a diamond 701 Profile might one day come into existence? Or even an Ultra-Fine 701 stone?

All your sharpening equipment is top notch in my book but I do really love the 701 Profiles for many different reasons. The Goldenstone and the Duckfoot are both next on my list.

And thanks again for the H-1 Spyderhawk. It truly made my year in a bad economy :)

LOL don't let me be putting any pressure on you, I know you have a LOT on your plate all the time! I just was curious when it might be available :)

I think the training video that came with the sharpmaker I bought recently was pretty good (you make a pretty good model in addition to all the other hats you wear! :D ), of course my first sharpmaker I bought before the days of DVD players, I think in the late '80s. Lost track of that one in a storage box somewhere around here, so had to get another one. I appreciate the incremental improvements in the design, my first one stored in a vinyl pouch, not quite as well protected as the plastic container of the current one, and of course it only had the one 40-degree angle setting.

Hi JD.

The ProFile was the predesessor to the Golden Stone. It was the closest we could get at the time. It's not a big seller and the tooling require to make a diamond version is quite expensive. That's not a "no", but a "not at this time".
