I have a birthday coming up and am thinking about asking for a duckfoot sharpener. Does anyone have experience with these? My current 'system' (its not a system at all, but it works) is a old piece of leather I picked up from a local boot shop for a buck and one of these:

Is the duckfoot relatively easy to use? And one last question, is the 20 degree angle it produces adequate for most folders? I have only ever sharpened freehand, and I can produce good results (shaving easily). Thanks.

It has enough flat surfaces to easily be used for a benchstone if you wish to freehand. Mine came without the instruction DVD, and I may just be too stupid to figure out how to use it properly, but I found it awkward to use for PE sharpening, as I can't figure out how I'm supposed to work the right side of the blade on the left side of the sharpener without switching hands or crossing my wrists. It does work great for restoring trashed serrations, though.

Duckfoot sharpener works great!! The instructional DVD is very good, and Sal's presentation will make you want to figure out if there is an edge it can't sharpen. It's all a matter of mating the right surface on the tool to the edge involved. Does a heck of a job on lowly nail clippers for one!

What kind of Diamond coating does it have?

Medium Coarse?

It might come in handy for recurved and hawkbill blades and for the serations.

Hi Maarten,

From the 2008 catalog: Steel form construction is nickel plated, bonding 600 mesh mono-crystalline diamonds to the steel. :)

I dug up this chart;

According the mesh is sowhat between coarse and fine. I guess it somewhat simular to the DMT fine stones which are coarser then the Ceramic Mediums.

Thanx Peter;)

The Spyderco sharpmaker diamond triangles are 400 mesh.

the byrd Duckfoot sharpener uses 600 mesh.

The Duckfoot is just so damn clever. It is on my Spyderco must have list near the top.

Thanks for the replies, I think I'm going to pick one up before the end of the month. There are some serrations around here that need sharpening

We also have a fine grit ceramic version coming out. Quite expensive though. (approx $150). Beautiful stone.

thanks for the information. This one might come in handy for holiday backup and peculiar bladeshapes:cool:.

After using the Duckfoot a lot, I'll definitely be getting one of the ceramic versions. Just too handy and will allow getting a finer edge.
