Duct Tape....

this doesn't really fit here, but someone was talking about it before, anyone have a source for self-amalgamating tape. you know the kind that seals to itself? if anyone knows a b&m store that carries it that'd be even better.

thanks,

Pete

Try a commercial plumbing supply or call your local water department to see if they have a supplier.

Having personally survived three hurricanes (the last one included a fire dept. forced evacuation at 5:30am), I'm also a big fan of duct tape over the windows and patio doors. The residue is a lot easier to get rid of than masking tape that's been left too long on the glass. What a chore that is to clean up! :(

Pete

"Self-amalgamating?"

Isn't that illegal in most states?

Sorry -- couldn't resist. Grin.

Precisely why I do it. If the window cracks, it might not blow-out completely, and "clean-up" is a breeze if you do lose a whole window. At our place you can't really board up, because of vinyl siding, besides you couldn't get back in off the deck if you did board:rolleyes: ! Also, IF there is a claim, it at least LOOKS like you tried to prepare if you take pictures of it prior to sending a claim in.

Next time you get a bumber sticker, peel off the sticker and save the backing. Cut a piece of duct tape just a bit shorter and carefully press it on to the backng.

You can fold the combo flat and pack it into a survival kit, pocket pack or whatever. The coating on the backing paper will let the duct tape peel away without loosing it's stickness - just as it did for the bumper sticker.

Only drawback is that you are limited to having a piece of emergency duct tape that is only as long as a bumper sticker.........but hey, the price is certainly right!

Hehe...

I LOVE duct tape(quack).

It has regular use sealing the rusted out sunroof on my VW Bug. Does a decent job, but the water gets trhough eventually after driving down the freeway for a while!

Great for plumbing. Had a sewer pipe break in the basement this week. Still waiting for a plumber, but some silicone sealing tape around the break, some cardboard spacers(1/2" gap between exposed threads and OD of pipe) and wrap everything with a healthy dose of duct tape, and it's water tight so far.

I love this stuff.... Gotta go buy some more. Keep a roll or two EVERYWHERE. In the BOB, in the car, in the house, _EVERYWHERE_.

Hehe... I've heard of people doing short-term(get out of the woods alive) repairs to front-ends. Duct tape on the tie rod anyone? Gotta go through a LOT more than 18" for that! Wrap it tight with a lot of layers and hope it holds as you drive by that 200 foot cliff!

I wouldn't fix a tie rod with duct tape. That's the time to get out the jumper cables and the coathanger and do some arc welding. (What -- you don't keep a coathanger in your car to use for welding rod??? Carrying real welding rod and a welding helmet is cheating!)

Jrollins -- if that sunroof is more or less intact and it's leaking around the edges because the rubber gasket rotted with age, just clean out the drains. There are drains in each corner of it that lead by hoses all the way down to the bottom of the VeeWee (four of them, and four separate hoses), and they get clogged up with leaves and stuff. Clean them out with a straightened coathanger and the sun roof will never leak even if there's nothing left of the gasket at all. I ran the Beetle From Outer Space with no gasket for years and I never did bother to replace it because it never leaked once I cleaned out the drains.

Actually, I remember hearing about the duct taped tie rod somewhere. Don't remember when where or how true.

As for the sunroof, the drains are more than likely clogged, but a good portion of the innards are rusted out. Pics on my web site:

I'm not sure what to do about it for now besides the duct tape, but that's a discussion for another BBS.

We use duct tape during extrications at RTA's (MVA's). Car windows are covered in lengths of 6 inch duct tape, then the glass is punched in one corner. The whole window comes out, leaving hardly any glass in the car to cut us or the casualties.

I don;t remember where the site is, but there is a site that has adhesion coefficients, which is the level of stickiness.

I think Nashua 357 was the best, and Nashua 398 was pretty close.

I will try to get the site.

I have not had good experience with the "Duck"-brand products. They do not last or re-stick when necessary.

Hey, the image link is broken.

Craig,
I did not skim up to see where it was quoted from, but here is the page that had the link. The picture of flat pack Duck tape is there. So lets see if this works Have DUCK Tape, Will Travel .

-----------

Gaffer's tape. I was just in Pearl's Art Supplies and saw gaffer's tape. 21 colors. Perhaps a bright one for marking and a dull one for repairs? Price started at 4.68 for 30 yds of 1." There was also 2 and 3" widths. I was rushing, and did not jot down the brand, but I think the reason was that it was "Pearl's" branded. I did notice it was supposed to be hand tearable, residue free removal, think it said vinyl backed, and it did seem thick, althoug hard to tell with a large core to the roll. They also had other tapes.

I apoligize for not responding for a while....
My computer had been on the blink ...just got it back from the shop and trying to play catch up...

Donald, thanks for posting the link.

:)

Gaffer's tape (use by photographers) are supposedly goo-free when you remove it. But gaffer's tape is pricey.

Another duct tape story. There was an offroader that did some damage to his front differential when he hit a rock. It left a gaping hole. Duct tape to the rescue as a temporary solution. Obviously he had extra gear oil with him.

There is a duct tape scholarship each year. I forgot who sponsors it, probably 3M. A scholarship prize goes to the couple that has the best tux and prom dress that is made completely out of duct tape. I didn't believe it until I saw it on the news!

Another great tape is the cloth 'gaff' tape used by roadies to tape down cables, etc. Same width as duct tape but black cloth-like material and doesn't leave a residue. If I could remember the brand name I would tell you.

Just head over to a professional photo store (not Ritz) and they'll have gaffer's tape on their shelves albeit pricey though. A 2" x 60 yard roll costs anywhere from $23-$33.
