Dui Chirra VS Berkeley Special

The first HI dui chirra was copied from a cast of an old dui chirra in my collection. Foxjaw made the cast, Pala carried it back to Nepal, and Bura made the first one. Someone referred to it as the Berk special, but it's really the HI Dui Chirra. Later Foxjaw made a model of a dui chirra to his own design, and Uncle Bill called that one the Foxy Folly.
Or at least that's how I remember it. At my age, short-term memory is the second thing to go..... I forget what the first thing was:o.

The biggest standard HI Dui Chirra's (all without the tool set) haven't been over 18" and about 31-33 oz. (Unless you count the super thin 22" 24 oz. FFF run.) Vim made/makes the heaviest ones. The standard Berk's special runs 22" and about 36 oz. There were 3 or 4 pinned handled ones in chandan in 2005 that were also 21-22" but that ran a bit lighter. I've seen 3 of the older Berk's specials, and they are all very similar to what I've seen posted here, really uniform.

I picked up Berk's Specials from Uncle Bill in the regular 22", but also one-off's in 18" and 15", all with tools. I wrote about the 18" when a buffer took it away from me and banged it pretty good.

I would like to see some more Berkley Specials in the 22# /36 oz range offered.
I cant afford one, but I'd like to see those classy broads make a comeback.

Can I get some pictures of each one with sizes and descriptions posted in this thread?
I really like the Berkeley Special and when I get money again, I am going to order one just because I want to put it above the
mantle..

NEWS FLASH: Yangdu says she has ONE in the secret stash and maybe she will put up some pics of it.

that is a beast, I NEED one
ted, can you help me out
how much do they cost?

Mac,

The HI website lists them at $350. http://www.himalayan-imports.com/new.html
Sometimes Yangdu gets them without the tools and they're less. Try emailing her at himimp@aol.com and ask her what she has in stock.

Steve

Since I've been here only a few have gone for that much, at least on the proffered forum sales.

All the Berk's on the DOTD's (Deal of the Day) seemed to go for $195 for the longest time. LOL, in late 2005 Yangdu sold a couple in chandan for as low as $175, and seemed to have standardized on that price.

I wrote to her and said basically, geez Yangdu, you should sell these for at least $195, you're shortchanging yourself! So, sure enough the next one was back up to $195, and I emailed on it.;) I'm probably the only guy here who insisted on charging himself more. :D

I still stand by that. My point was that our collections were an investment, and when the standard price (not the super specials like at Christmas, Bill's Birthday, etc.), dropped to a new level we were losing on that.

$350 may be towards the higher end of what they've sold for on the forum, but in my opinion for this knife that's a great deal for what you get. Just think what any custom maker in the US would charge for this kind of work!

All the sets I've seen had antler tools. Steve's fine looking one here is the only one I recall seeing with horn. Sure is pretty, as is that wonderful handle.
