I now have four Bucks, three Timberlakes and one BCCI 112 with the "chipped flint" blades. They are all new, never used and only one (the Timberlake 532) came with blades sharp enough to cut hot butter.

The way they are now, they wouldn't even make a good letter opener.:thumbdn: I suppose that they are more to look at than to use, but is that typical of the chippys?

Yes, that is certainly typical of every one that I have ever seen, but I suspect one could put on a better edge if he was so inclined. And yes, I doubt that any were ever designed to actually be used for anything other than admiration. Imagine that, for a knive!! :D

My brother and i discussed the dullness of the chippies
my humble opinion in short =
yes it is typical of chippies and
yes they are mainly a looks knife not users.
the chips are only done on full thick blanks
other wise it would ruin the knife
to take a full thick blade with no hollow grind
and sharpen it is quite a bit of metal removed
you can make a chippie sharp enught to shave with
my brother was going to do so..
but
look at how much metal you have to remove and
that "edge" with would be supper wide
quite a lot would have to be removed from the edge
so much that it would take away from the looks of the knife!
on discussion of this
my brother decided to NOT have his sharpened to that degree..
but if you want a user it is some thing to consider..

Thanks guys, I was just wondering if I had received some that weren't typical. I would never really consider using them for anything, but it just seems to me that a knife should CUT!
They remind me of a Hamilton Mint Indian Motorcycle knife that a friend had me buy for him on Ebay. Now that knife (can you really call it a knife?) is so dull that you couldn't cut yourself if you tried.
The funny thing is that the Timberlake 532 will shave hair off your arm, but the others are just plain dull.

I had a DUC BCCI 112 [black horn] sharpned to a razor edge at a knife shop in Dunnellon...My son Richard has it now.The edge had a 'wicked' polished look from the sharpining Really cool!

I didn't tell you about that Bro... I didn't want to give it to him not being super sharp,he uses it for self defence....
