Dull edge after cutting sandbags?

I spent the day cutting old, dirty carpet and non-skid tape with my knife before I used it to scrape barnacles from the hull of a ship and now it's dull! Does anyone know why??!!??

I dunno... it should be pretty obvious to anybody into knives that cutting open sandbags will dull your edges...
