Man, I learned something interesting today.
I used my shaving sharp Paramilitary 2 to cut some Fiberglass reinforced tape today; maybe 20 pieces.
Now, it won't even shave.
What else have you found to dull an edge quickly?
Lenny

Anything with fiberglass in it is going to wreck your edge pretty quick.

Cardboard can dull an edge fairly quickly as well.

Cardboard. Not that hard to cut, but cutting it'll get rid of that shaving sharp edge quickly.

Hah! When I saw the thread title I thought this was going to be a thread complaining about the Spyderco Sharpmaker :p

All the things I find dulls my edge real quick can been mentioned already; cardboard, carpet, plastics etc.

Anything you cut will make your knife duller than before, either quickly or slowly.

But, that's why they make things which sharpen knives!

I gave my son a couple of nice knives which he used and carried for a while, then they quite appearing.

I asked him why he wasn't carrying his knives any more, and after some tooth-pulling, he admitted that they had gotten dull and wouldn't cut anymore.

"Huh!" I said. "What you gonna do about that?"

"Would you sharpen them for me?"

"Uh-uh. But I'll teach you how to sharpen them."

"But, I might mess them up!"

I told him that short of grinding the blade away on a belt grinder, he couldn't mess them up to any degree that I couldn't fix. I'd never turn him loose on my belt grinder, not until he gets a lot better at it.

So now he's sharpening his own knives and doing a decent job of it, and the knives are once again being used and carried.

Fiberglass insulation is pretty bad I made my endura so dull you could see the entire edge, it felt so smooth and round .Also dirty weed barrier fabric and carpet .

Stripping scrap copper wire to sell. 4 bucks a pound GOTTA STRIP IT THOUGH!
Seriously it dulls and chips every blade I use on it within 5 cuts. It works better then a utility blade though and even with it dull I can still power through the insulation easy enough.

Dirty ropes are very rough on edges.

As is cutting car tires.

But not as bad as 100# bags of sandblasting abrasive.

Every time I lend my knives out, they seem to come back astoundingly dull. I'm starting to think my friends have a unique way of dulling any blade they touch.

Also, full sandbags just wreak havoc on my knives.

Carpet padding. I had to trim a bunch up a while back for a new area carpet I got. I used 2 knives; a Buck 486 in 420hc & a BHK in 01. The BHK only needed to be touched up a little less that the Buck. That surprised me, I guess 420hc aint such a inferior steel afterall. But the worst is the dreaded dinner plate. My wife seriously buggered the edge up on my BM 190 in d2 cutting chocolate on a plate. Resistance, resistance, SLAM.

Those 80# bags of redi-mix concrete aren't too gentle on an edge either. I always try to remember a fixed blade when mixing concrete...you definitely don't want that stuff getting in the pivot of a folder!

insulation is the worst ruined the edge on a sebenza in a total of about 4 feet of cutting. to the point where i couldnt even cut myself if i tried.

After years of practice, I finally have my wire stripping skills down to a science. I can strip any size wire evenly and consistently without chipping my edge, but any knife will still dull while you're stripping the wire. Not much you can do about that.
