Ok As I posted a short time ago.
http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum54/HTML/000513.html

I taught myself how to reliably get a very nice edge with just flat stones and no gizmo. Oh man the additional pleasure I get from my using knives by painstakingly caring for them beats out the concern of the possibility of not getting the keenest edge. Dont get me wrong. I cant remember making the edge to exactly what I want any other way. But damn it wouldnt matter. I love sitting there and Sharpening it the way my uncle and such would and then coating it with oil .... Okay Im a little excited. It is quite relaxing though. Any how .. When I posted that other link I was using a 24 dollar trihone that I got from McMaster-Carr Catalog. (Great Catalog by the way)

I just recently went and bought a soft, hard and Black Arkansas bench stone in ceder boxs. After some careful checking I think I got some decent prices especially on the black. http://www.shopsmith.com/cshowgrp-26370

Anyway .. Whew and to the point .. the stones come in these nifty ceder boxes with the stone type pressed into the outside. No ...No indication on the stone if its Hard, soft or indifferent. I know I know ... Anyway in my exuberance I uncovered all three at once .... Stop laughing .... Well the black was easy to figure out but the soft and hard ... I looked at them and felt them and think I got it right but I stillwould like some other opinions. One is kind of gray with no real color variations the other TO me feels denser and is light gray with pink / brown streaks running through it. Well the uniformly gray one felt like it was a bit more porous but still does anyone know which is which by the color of the stone. I know this is a dumb a@$ questions but I just gotta know ??

Alex, why don't you just call the people where you bought them? They should be able to tell you quickly.
So, we gonna meet you on Nov. 10??
BTW-is it the MNH that you work at? If it is, shoot me an email,if you don't mind, one of my friends is a photog there.
Take care, Dave

The "all grey" one is the softest, then the one with "pink/brown" streaks.

Hope that helps.

Now that you have discovered the pure joy in using flat stones, try the spyderco stones. you can use them dry, and when they start to load up you simply scrub them in the sink with a little warm soapy water and a scotch brite pad.

Thanks, Matt.

Given that the colors MAY be misleading, if you want to be absolutely certain, (and assuming that all stones are the same size)
Weigh them!
The harder stone will be heavier due to greater density.

If you don't have a scale, just go to the post office and use the postal scales.
They're accurate enough for what you want.
