Dumb epoxy question...

Its true that softening weakens the epoxy but at the same time it increases the strain capability. Low modulus and high strain is what you want with exp. coef. mismatch.

Another problem is that some materials seem to loose some adhesion when heated.

You fellas using Devcon 2-Ton epoxy? I have rod-building experience with various epoxies and this stuff has served me well, sounds like the way you guys should go. Sets is 2 hours, fully cures in 24. I made a 6' fishing gaff out of this stuff and the only thing holding the hook to the shaft (inside) was the devcon. I cut notches 1/4" deep along both sides of the shank of the hook, and roughened up the entire surface to be covered with coarse sanpaper so the epoxy will grip it better. Thish gaff has lifted 90# fish, and handled stresses of much higher weights (300#+ mako) IMO this stuff is truly 2-ton waterproof epoxy and the best around. You can thin it with simple rubbing alcohol or acetone, but it will not cure ROCK Hard which is the desired effect. However in such tiny amounts as you are using it wouldnt be noticeable probably.
