Dumb Neophyte Question: What is a knife for?

I am a student and carry at least one knife all the time. The other day some of my mates were being stupid with a cable tie and one of them got it caught on his hand and it was cutting off the circulation, I had a knife with a rounded-unsharpened tip and was able to cut it off before he caused serious damage. A pair of scissors just bounced off the tie. I also live rural and I consider it a necesity to carry a multi-tool and a dedicated knife for cutting. For instance One of my friends also at school was leaving to go 1500km away, we had acake for him as a going away but no-one had a knife, SAK to the rescue. Stripping wire for emergency repairs, you name ita knife is an important tool. Also if you end up in a survival situation, and people do, a knife can mean the differnence between life and death

Gosh, I've carried one for so long I can't even think of not having one...that's actually the most common answer I give.

I've carried a SAK with me since I was 11 or so almost everyday. Then around 14 my dad got me a Bench-Emerson CQC7 (god I wish I still had that knife) and I've carried a folder almost every day as well since then.

I am constantly handing my knife to people and a lot of the tell me, "dang, I should start carrying a knife.". So I usually go buy them a chive or something if they are a buddy :D

And I've also been in situations where I believe the crisp, unmistakeable "thwack" of an OTF probably saved me from getting hurt.

Bottom line is I am very proud to be the guy that has a knife when I need it....and I'm pissed when I dont.

PS - They are a great conversation piece.
