Dumb pouch sheath question

I would have to agree with Sandy....Only I would go with the flap over the pouch as I dont think a snap strap would hold well with no guard....

Rick,That is the first time I have seen a set of scales on a wrench knife, looks cool (I shoulda thought of that years ago).....

Flap over the pouch?
Like this?

Unit 29, south of Pinon, from the 9th to the 15th (of November obviously). My hunt permit (mule deer) is for the 10th-14th. Where are you going to be setting up?

It will be a completely different kind of hunting from what this South Texas boy is used to. Luckily the guys I am going with are returning to this area for the third time, so they have good experience to tap. I have done some mountain hiking and camping, but all my hunting has been flatland brushy areas and marshland. I expect to bust my tail a few times...hence the concern over the sheath for this knife.:D

Sandy is a full time sheath maker. Ive seen many of his sheaths and each one is made unique for that particular knife style. He has made sheaths longer than most of us have been on this earth. 10,000 is not an exaggeration.

If my opinion counts, I say that knife needs a flap and snap just like the one Ebbtide has pictured.

Hi, fitzo, my friend! I think you could conservatively double that figure.. One must remember that the opinion rendered here by me, referred to that knife pictured by CDH and none other. Each knife has its own peculiarities as far as secure sheathing is concerned. I do not question the merit of other replys but they do refer to other knives. A tight fit on a new sheath will not likely be a tight fit after it has been in the weather (and USED) for a few months.

Hi, fitzo, my friend! I think you could conservatively double that figure......

Chuck had told me long before it was a substantially larger number than 10k, as we marvelled at how many sheaths you'd made. I didn't wanna brag on ya tooo much and have it go to your head, though, so I made it seem modest! :D

Could a pouch sheath be built for that knife - yes but because of the size shape and shape of that knife are going to make retention difficult at best, I would suggest something more (as Sandy and others have suggested)....

IMNSHO you have two choices:
1) Build a pouch sheath and incorporate a rare earth magnet (small ones are sold at most hardware stores these days)
2) Build one with a flap as Ebbtide suggested

can it be done without the above - yep - here's one - but this was built as a "town" sheath - not one where the gent was going to be crawling around the countryside - so why take the chance of losing it when there are better alternatives........

..me, in the last 47 years I've only built about a third of the number of sheaths as Sandy has.... ;) :D ;) - but then Sandy's got a good 20 years on me (work wise that is) so I've still got a chance...

fitz - this is for you - me and pops last summer........

I know it's hard to tell us apart but I'm the handsome (NOT!) one on the left - well I do have more hair (and other things) than he does - that's gotta count for something! ;) :D ;)

Interesting thought on the rare earth magnet. I have some from old computer hard drives. How would you attach it? Add a small patch of leather on the backside of the sheath with the magnet inside? The thing about these magnets is that the strength falls off very rapidly with distance...so the thickness of 8-9 lb leather results (just tried it) in a significant reduction in holding power. I guess I could try and thin the leather down. I have VERY few leather working tools...basically a needle, thread, punch, and Exacto blades.

Now that's a cool foto! Thanks, Chuck. Ya know, there almost is, kindasorta, a resemblance.......:)

Nancy is diggin' your braids, BTW. She also got a kick out of my answer to, "What does 'IMNSHO' mean?"

CDH -
Simplest way is to "dig" a spot out of the leather on the inside - just deep/big enough to hold the magnet and then glue it in place. You can than cover it with a thin piece of leather or leave uncovered....

yep we both wear glasses, both have grey hair and mustaches........and both have Acadian ancestors - maybe that's it - of course I make about two of Sandy........

One of these days I'll have to let my 'freak flag fly' (you do remember that song don't you?) - and have Linda take a pic

She's lived with you how long and had to ask! :D

We listened to that album last month in a retro tunes day celebrating our times of idealism past.... add a little Grace Slick screaming at the establishment, some crazy Joe w/ James Gang, and a little Dead and it was a good day for tunes. "....gettin' kind a long, could'a said it was in my way. But I didn't, and I wonder why? Feel like letting....."

My cynicism and brashness has always been tempered by her innocence and natural kindness. There are good reasons I call us "The Angel and the AH" ;):D

The ones I dug out of a hard drive were very strong. I suspect that something weaker would be plenty for a secure hold and might make it a lot easier to get the knife out of the sheath.

I have basically finished (still needs to be sharpened) my next (4th) knife...my first hunter. I plan to try my first sheath. I have read a number of tutorials on basic pouch sheaths, but they all give me the willies. I will be hiking aorund the mountains of New Mexico in about 3 weeks with this on my hip.

Is a pouch sheath secure enough to not have it fall out sometime when I am crawling over rocks and such?

Here's the knife, for what it is worth. O1 and mesquite...my first home HT also. I built this as a light hunter especially for hard hunts like I am about to take. I'd hate to lose it with a bad sheath design.

What do you think? Pouch sheath or try some other design?

You could go ahead and do a pouch style sheath, and why not? They look good, and are reasonably easy and inexpensive to make. If you think that you need a bit more security, wrap a snap strap around the sheath at the spot where the knife grip curves in so that it pinches a little.

I've done this a few times and the end results are similar to a western style revolver holster.

Sunshadow Does the acetone eat the epoxy?

I haven't had it eat the epoxy yet, I only use the "2 ton" high strength epoxies and/or JBweld on knives, and I haven't had any problems yet. The acetone generally evaporates completely in 20 minutes or so, high quality epoxies do not seem to be affected by that kind of limited exposure. I suggest testing your materials to be sure before using anything you are not familiar with, I would not use any of the "5 minute" type epoxies as they seem to always be a little sticky and soft even after days and weeks, and they typically have a strong odor which tells me they have unbonded hydrocarbons.

I would surmise that between Chuck and myself that we have in the vicinity of a century of torturing cowhide (Cows, and a few bulls, hate us!) The thought passed my mind while I was sipping (?) on a cold one, concerning the volume of the work we have done in that length of time. If we placed all the knife sheaths and gun holsters end to end that we have made---how long would they stretch out? Sandy---nearly, but not quite, deceased!
