So what does “Spyderco” mean? What does the name refer to, how/why was it chosen, etc?

Hmm...?

I asked the same question some time ago and this is the reply I got from Sal:

Costas - The name Spyderco was a combination of the term "Spyder" used in higher performance sports cars and boats, and an early tool we made that looked like a stainless steel spider (a mechanical soldering fixture for the electrical industry, which we no longer produce).

Thanks for the info, Costas and Danelle. I like the name -- certainly unique amidst the array of "-tech" and "tactical-" names...
