We are getting ready for our annual pilgrimage to the Florida beaches. My wife went crazy and bought me 2 pair of Billibong and 2 pair of Salt Life board shorts. I have never heard of board shorts. I am a Midwesterner and the beach is really far away from us. :) The board shorts are awesome - I like them a lot, however, I need a little help. Do you wear these commando style or should I have something on underneath? There is no "liner" like regular swimming shorts. Help me..... 'do the right thing'! :D

Commando if you are going in the water.

Underwear if you aren't and that is more comfortable.

Also be sure to check for transparency issues in bright sunlight before you go walking down main street. :)

This was my thought. Thanks for posting.

If you're going to wear underwear, and you're going to be in the water, I suggest NOT wearing cotton underwear. Instead, pick up a couple pair of nylon/polyester/spandex compression style boxer-briefs from Walmart. They're comfortable when wet, and they dry quickly. Walmart has their Starter brand for about $10/pair or so.

I just checked the tag on mine. They are 81% polyester and 19% spandex. Other companies make similar, but the Walmart brand is easy and affordable.

Commando, they dry really fast that way. Bring talc/baby powder if you plan to do any walking around after playing in the salt water.

This.

Jockey and UA make really good dry-fit/wicking briefs. It's a life changing move from regular cotton boxers lol.

As a native Floridian- Board shorts are normally worn without underwear, but if you need underwear, definitely use one of the blended high tech kind.

Now, this is were it probably gets to TMI- I am a little overweight 225 5'10" and have to wear good quality underwear otherwise I chafe on my thighs. I know people were joking about "life changing" above, but seriously, Exofficio boxer briefs have changed my life! They are a bit expensive, but last a long time, are the most comfortable underwear I have ever used, and dry quickly. I now own 5 pairs, that cost me about $110 all together. They are the only underwear I wear. It's one of those things that may sound silly, but I cannot express how good these are. I literally buy 98% of my clothes at goodwill and any given day, my Exofficio boxer briefs are equal in cost to all the other clothing I am wearing, but if I had to, I would pay twice as much for them.

Thanks, Bruce, for that honest review. You made me go out and buy a pair of these fancy smancy undies. I got some at Gander Mountain. On sale for $14 ea. I am a city mailman. I walk all day-- some days in 100 + degree heat. I hope these will help with that too.

Like my fabric stretching friend Bralexander, I carry a little extra and found the Tommy Johns undies very nice. With a quick draw horizontal flap I can be out in a jiffy as well. Expensive at $31 a pair so I wear them when I am hiking and camping. Otherwise the UA's work fine. No more cotton for this "beef".
